Based loosely on the Smokestack Series’ The Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel is separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels where it ages for varying lengths of time, some for up to three years. Cherries are added to make up for the “angel’s share” of beer lost during barrel aging. Selected barrels are then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore.

@ Havregatan. Flaska (750 ml) från Systembolaget (159:-). Maltig, bourbon, vanilj och ek, hög sötma, karamell, viss syrlighet, något för endimensionell. I avslutningen finns bourbon och sötma.

2010 Bottle sampled Nov 2015. Lighter dark-caramel pour, not much head. Strong bourbon nose, plums and cherries. Somewhat sweet, presenting the bourbon right up front with lots of vanilla, this is a strange drink. As a quad, I’m not sure I like the bourbon. As a beer, this was really quite enjoyable. 3.6 seems like a dreadful lowball, but I don’t know quite where this would deserve a bump.

(bottle) Pours a reddish-orange color with a towering off-white head that settles to a medium cap. Aroma consists of dates, oak, cherries, maple syrup, vanilla, and lightly burnt brown sugar. Further warming replaces the lightly burnt sugar character with some charred wood that gets close to smelling a bit vegetal and green bell peppery. Even further warming yields something reminiscent of roasted sunflower seed or tahini. Flavor holds a very solid expression of bourbon (reminds me of EC 12), dried cherry, dates, prune, oak, apple, cinnamon, red vines licorice, light barrel char, with some lingering sweet roll and bourbon on the finish. The high abv is virtually imperceptible. This is pretty solid.

The aroma is complex but a little weak. It has notes of cherries, oak, bourbon and vanilla but I wanted something stronger. Pours a pretty dark brown with a light brown ring of sticky foam. The taste has all of the qualities of a quad that I like, but they have replaced the dank/dark fruit aspect with pure bourbon barrel character. The cherries are a nice edition; they keep it from being too hot. Crazy drinkable for 11.8%. This is excellent. I can’t believe it has taken me so long to try it.

Light brown with medium-fine dust colored head that fades moderate-slowly. Aroma is vanilla lavender caramel and some clove. Hint of banana. Flavor is a balance of phenol, moderate clove, touch of pepper and fresh bread, and moderate-light toffee. Body is medium-heavy, slightly syrupy. Overall, an highly enjoyable quad, still, just barely approaching the standards of Belgian powerhouses.

October 28, 2015. Bottle at home, 2013 vintage.
Light hazy reddish amber with a medium sized yellowish head. Aroma is sweet caramel, bourbon, vanilla, pear, peaches, alcohol, some highest alcohol notes as well. Taste is sweet caramel and fruits, medium bitter. Finish is sweet caramel, baked pear, peach, light oak notes, alcohol, quite bitter with hints of highest alcohol. Medium to full bodied, soft to average carbonation.
Decent, there are some higher solvemt like alcohol notes in the aroma and the finish gets a harsh bitter note from the higher alcohol. I was expecting more from this one.

Not quite what I was hoping for. Pours a hazy brown with small tan head. Smell is bourbon, bananas, and vanilla. Tastes a little odd. Some alcohol heat, some berry flavors. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This rating is for the 2014 release.
Appearance Pours deep dark brown, with a creamy tan head, nice lacing
Aroma Toffee? Nope. Cherries? Nope. Vanilla? Nope. Booze, booze, more booze, and a hint of oak? Bingo.
Taste Sickly sweet
Palate Solventy hot, slick, low carbonation
Overall Tasted like carbonated bourbon. Maybe the flavours would have mellowed if I stored it for ages, but I honestly expected the beer to be drinkable right from the store, like most beers are.
