COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Based loosely on the Smokestack Series’ The Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel is separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels where it ages for varying lengths of time, some for up to three years. Cherries are added to make up for the “angel’s share” of beer lost during barrel aging. Selected barrels are then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore.

already a fan of the sixth glass, i was expecting this to be dominated by bourbon flavors (which I like). As it turns out, the barrel aging softens the fruity and sour flavors, adds a touch of bourbon flavor, an overall makes a nice improvement on an already good beer

Type: 750-ml. bottle Glass: Karl Strauss 26th anniversary tulip glass From: Barons Market in Alpine, Calif. Price: $14.99 Purchased: June 18, 2017 Consumed: July 8, 2016 Reviewed as: Quadrupel (Quad) Misc.: Bottled on Sept. 18, 2015; Best by Sept. 2017; Cork and cage top; Received from Rachel for Father’s Day Thanks, Rachel! Definitely a huge fan of Boulevard and happy that Rachel picked this one out for Father’s Day. Really have high hopes for this one. Expecting at least a 4.25. Poured a reddish-brown, amber, semi-clear color with 3-to-4 fingers of frothy, khaki head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Excellent foamy lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.25) Smelled toffee, oak, bourbon, vanilla, leather, tobacco, caramel, oaked cherries, booziness late and cherry figs. (Smell - 4.50) Taste wasn’t quite as good as the nose, but decent. Got oak, bourbon, leathery tobacco, earthy wood, vanilla, toffee, caramel, dry cherries, figs, hints of tart cherry and dates. (Taste - 4.25) Medium body. Creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Long, warming finish. (Feel - 4.50) Really liked this one. Just good all the way through. (Overall - 4.25) 4.34 96 A

The taste of this one is heaven. The bourbon barrel really brings out the best of this beer. You have a lot going on and I can’t even begin to pick out every single thing, but I will try. A rich malt base with caramel, vanilla, brown sugar. Sounds sweet? The barrel aromas step in and balance it out. It has a nice, round, full bodied taste with a long finish where the bourbon barrel notes just wont disappear. I really enjoyed this one.

Bottle at home. Two year old. Has a deep unclear mahogany colour with a creamy beige head. Aroma of oak, dried fruit, heather, red berries and some alcohol and chocolate. Has a silky mouth feel, full-bodied and light bitterness. A complex and very rich ale.

Hazy dark amber pour with small tan head. Aroma of malts, fruits, toffee, vanilla and bourbon. Taste of malts, toffee, dried fruits, vanilla, oak, bourbon and subtle cherries. Full bodied, medium to low carbonation, strong bourbon finish that mellowed at lower temps. A little off balance but enjoyed more closer to room temperature.

10cl sample from bottle at the Leuven Innovation Beer Festival II 2016 (16 V 2016). This Bourbon quad fits the top 50 of quadrupel brews and it really has some trump cards. A brown ale with medium carbonation, dirty looking. Spices and bourbon notes cover the flavours, the mouthfeel is very dry, peaty, straw. The taste has a keen bitter sweet balance, making this a lovely, high alcohol drink.

At LIBF. Moussy, dense, egg-white head, cloudy amberish chestnut bronze colour. Rich aroma of vanilla tannins, dried banana, medlar, pear syrup, wet wood, bourbon, marzipan, candied orange, marmelade; sweet onset, rounded, brown sugar, fig, banana with a very (too?) subtle cherry sourishness, fluffy and full mouthfeel, caramelly, toffeeish, oaky finish with beautiful retronasal vanilla-like tannins, warming whisky-like alcohol. Rich and opulent, but perhaps a bit too much tilted to the sweet side, a tad more cherry tartness could probably have made this even better.
