One of the brightest stars in a city filled with culinary treasures, Christopher Elbow has been hand-crafting masterpieces in chocolate for more than ten years. In that time the reputation of his artistic delicacies has spread around the globe. Elbowís sweets are distinguished by their use of unusual and sometimes surprising flavors and ingredients; in that adventurous spirit we joined forces to bring you a very special Chocolate Ale. Chocolate Ale is full of surprises, beginning with a glowing amber hue. The aroma is given over to earthy, fruity cocoa, with just a hint of hops. Smooth layers of dark chocolate intertwine with threads of caramel, vanilla, and nutty malt as the flavor warms and rounds to a bittersweet finish.

Cocoa powder and vanilla aroma. Light sweet taste with definite chocolate notes coming through. Light and lively in the mouth but definitely has some body to it. A bitter chocolate finish. Good, interesting beer.

On tap at House Beer. Copper pour, off-white head. Aroma of fruit, caramel, chocolate. Tastes are big chocolate, vanilla, dark fruit. Strange, ok. - 6.8

Bottle; poured a bog water type brown with a khaki colored head. Aroma was surprisingly subdued, with notes of caramel, fruit and cocoa. Flavor had a lot of nuance for a chocolate beer. Layered w/ various notes at various times. Finish lingered with some boozy heat. Nutty, caramel and chocolate. Mild to low bitterness. Probably would have liked a more chocolate centered beer.

Chocolaty earthy aroma. Pours murky orange with a thin white head, a lot of yeast got kicked up from the bottle. Nice balanced flavor, not real bitter, malty up front with a sweet finish.

750 ml bottle from binnyís. This looks very interesting. Dark yellow bordering on tan. Aroma is cocoa with some vanilla and alcohol. A touch of bourbon? Taste is cocoa with some earthy tones. This is interesting if not amazing. Caramel throughout.

One redeeming feature: very smooth, but I was mostly dissapointed in this budget buster. The flavor profile gets muddled. Iím not sure what this ale wants to be. Alcohol well hidden, but I canít sign off on this one. Serving: 750ml bottle.

I was expecting a stout so very surprised when I saw the amber orange pour. Sorry, but I got ZERO chocolate in aroma. Great palate; taste did have powdered chocolate. well balanced beer with the hops not overly sweet - well done and different.

750ml bottle, shared with friends. Pours kind of an amber color. Minimal head off-white head, loose bits of lace. Basic flavor... Some chocolate, cocoa. Kind of spicy, caramel malt. Bigger sweet taste. Moderate bitter. Medium body. Kind of soft lighter kind of crisp carbonation. Mild slick. Ah, I donít know. We were wondering if thisíd be a chocolate stout or chocolate amber, and we were prepared to be ok with chocolate amber. But even to style, itís not as impressive as Iíd hope for a Smokestack Series.

Bomber, poured into a snifter at approximately 40 degrees F. Appearance: This pours like some sort of amber ale, complete with massively frothy head. Smell: Sugar and chocolate waft out of the glass, as if the contents were liquefied candy. Taste: And the aroma lied. Thereís nothing sweet about this beer at all, and no taste of chocolate that I could detect. The entirety of the flavor profile was earth and wood, bringing to mind a pile of old pallets left to sink slowly into a rainy field. Spices were also along, a muddled jumble of white and black pepper with something like ginger along. Mouthfeel: Medium of body, and otherwise unremarkable. Overall: I truly dislike when a beer is billed as having a particular adjunct, and yet nothing of that adjunct can be found in the flavor. It feels like false advertising, even if said adjunct is actually in the beer. Iím also not a fan of expecting something sweet and getting hit in the tongue with a clod of wet, woody mud. Not a repeater.
