One of the brightest stars in a city filled with culinary treasures, Christopher Elbow has been hand-crafting masterpieces in chocolate for more than ten years. In that time the reputation of his artistic delicacies has spread around the globe. Elbow’s sweets are distinguished by their use of unusual and sometimes surprising flavors and ingredients; in that adventurous spirit we joined forces to bring you a very special Chocolate Ale. Chocolate Ale is full of surprises, beginning with a glowing amber hue. The aroma is given over to earthy, fruity cocoa, with just a hint of hops. Smooth layers of dark chocolate intertwine with threads of caramel, vanilla, and nutty malt as the flavor warms and rounds to a bittersweet finish.

Appearance is a murky light brown with a creamy slightly off white foam cap. Aroma very close to your typical amber ale with caramel dominating, but with a slight hint if vanilla. Hops not evident. Taste is interesting. Starts really sweet caramel, gives way to a bit of toasted malt and vanilla, and a slightly woody and earthy taste. I might get the slightest hint of bittersweet chocolate, but it’s barely there. Mouthfeel is medium with a moderate to high level of carbonation. At the finish the body seems to dissipate and become light and dry, which causes the alcohol to stand out and dominate. There is the slightest indication of bittersweet chocolate that lingers

Pours a hazy orange. A shocking aroma for the appearance - strong with chocolate. A strong cocoa powder taste with some caramel and very light coffee. Lingering chocolate taste.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy copper color with a thin, off-white head. Slight hops with a strong cocoa aroma. Amazing chocolate presence in the flavor. Light, hoppy bite in the finish, but tons of cocoa. Really good brew.

Bottle; poured a bog water type brown with a khaki colored head. Aroma was surprisingly subdued, with notes of caramel, fruit and cocoa. Flavor had a lot of nuance for a chocolate beer. Layered w/ various notes at various times. Finish lingered with some boozy heat. Nutty, caramel and chocolate. Mild to low bitterness. Probably would have liked a more chocolate centered beer.

Chocolaty earthy aroma. Pours murky orange with a thin white head, a lot of yeast got kicked up from the bottle. Nice balanced flavor, not real bitter, malty up front with a sweet finish.

750 ml bottle from binny’s. This looks very interesting. Dark yellow bordering on tan. Aroma is cocoa with some vanilla and alcohol. A touch of bourbon? Taste is cocoa with some earthy tones. This is interesting if not amazing. Caramel throughout.

One redeeming feature: very smooth, but I was mostly dissapointed in this budget buster. The flavor profile gets muddled. I’m not sure what this ale wants to be. Alcohol well hidden, but I can’t sign off on this one. Serving: 750ml bottle.
