3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hazy dark copper pour with a tall, super creamy beige head that has great retention, is sustained by an active, but small bubbled effervescence. Aroma is bakers chocolate, toast, toffee, roasted nuts and crusty wheat bread. Flavor is full of toffee nuts and bread crust up front, followed by interesting chocolate notes, something, fruity, yet chocolaty, almost what I would expect chocolate beans to taste like, possibly at various stages of processing, caramel, dark fruit, boozy warmth and a little pie spice. Medium body, warm, chewy feel throughout medium, blanketing carbonation. Good stuff overall, definitely not what I was expecting.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Type: 750-ml glass (25.9 oz.)
Glass: Sea Smoke oversized wine glass
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Aug. 20, 2014
Consumed: Aug. 23, 2014
Misc.: No. 14 in Boulevard Smokestack Series; Batch No: CH13365-1; Best by Sept. 2014; Twist off cap and cork
Poured a brownish, caramel, murky color with 3-to-4 fingers of frothy off-white head. Thought the color would be darker. Average amount of foamy lacing along the sides of the glass. Good retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.94)
Smell surprised me a bit. I was expecting straight chocolate, kind of like the imperial stout I had from Boulevard’s a few months ago. Got caramel, toffee, butterscotch, popcorn and creamy vanilla before I even reached the chocolate. Then got dark, rich chocolate, but still had to work for it. Overall this wasn’t too appealing on the nose. (Smell - 3.40)
First taste was like the smell, but it got slightly better. Got caramel, toffee, butterscotch, peas (I know), chocolate, cocoa, chocolate syrup, buttery malts and more green veggies (I know). (Taste - 3.53)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, somewhat smooth finish. (Feel - 3.63)
This beer just wasn’t really for me, which is something I rarely would say with Boulevard. Just an OK ASA. (Overall - 3.50)

It?s unusual to have an ale with chocolate flavours rather than a darker beer but this pulls it off great. Big cocoa flavours. Very nice. on tap in Savannah.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750ml bottle pours a pale brown color with a lot of frothy head. Mild and easy going. Surprising pale color for a chocolate beer. Mild cocoa flavor.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours amber, with ample white head. The aroma is lightly of malts, cocoa, with just a hint of hops. Smooth layers of chocolate with vanilla. Sweet and very drinkable. Thumbs up.

Bottle at jackl’s tasting courtesy of a person or persons, thanks! Hazy deep golden amber color, white edge head. Aroma of grass, straw, light chocolate milk. Taste is cream, vanilla, hay; chocolate comes in at the finish, subtle.

3.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A chocolate ale that's amber?
The hue threw me, but comes in a lovely copper with pale and diminishing head. Aromatics are some malt and spice, with sadly nothing else to lure the nose.
Surprisingly caramels and chocolate burst on the palate with full body and medium effervescence that finishes spicy and clean.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle, caged and corked. Impressive pour, visually. Much lighter shade of brown than I’d anticipated. The head is simply towering, pock marked with bubbly foam. The aroma is simply "beery" IMHO, interestingly lacking of any hints at chocolate. This drinks with a very unique flavor, but again doesn’t come across as chocolate to my simple palate. Instead I get a little more of a fruity sweetness, and the rest of the attributes the brewer advertises ... very subtle caramel, and little vanilla. (#5605, 8/4/2014)

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Copper pour with a moderate, foamy tan head. Aroma is cocoa, thin chocolate, sweet malt, toasted grains, candy bars and soft fruit. Taste is cocoa, thin chocolate, candied fruit, chocolate covered fruit, sweet malt, grains, earthy notes and soft alcohol. Body is medium with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more chocolate, cocoa, earthy notes, sweet malt, toasted grains, dark bread and soft fruit notes. Tasty!
