COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barley, wheat, rye and oats provide the foundation for this big stout. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, creme brulee. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish. Such a robust beer stands well by itself, but also makes a wonderful end-note to any rich, indulgent meal. Discover the secret of combining this roasty ale to sweets, by pairing with dark chocolate or caramel, or even by pouring it over ice cream.

Along with coffee, chocolate, and dark fruits, Imperial Stouts often try to play up smoky flavors. This has to be done with care, though, as smoky notes tend to be bitter and heavy. That’s not the case at all with Boulevard’s Dark Truth Stout. The smoked malt flavors are far and away the best element of this brew. Rather than being acidic, the smokiness is savory, malty, and elegant. Mingling with bitter chocolate and booze-soaked fruit, the smoke taste is complex yet highly approachable. Dark Truth would be right at home with barbecued red meat and would probably be even better with a good cigar.

Big brown head. Opaque black body. Roasty resiny soy sauce and chocolate aroma with earthy licorice notes. Dry-sweet resiny roasty chocolatey taste with spicy crisp bread and soy sauce notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, mealy, velvety smooth mouthfeel. Dry roasty resiny chocolatey aftertaste with burnt strawberry candy notes. Interesting, drinkable, and very, very nice. I really like it. (0.355l bottle, from wine monopoly, Vika, Oslo.)

Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Nose is dark fruit and coffee. Taste is plum and roast. A little too much alcohol burn. I wonder this beer would age.

Pour from a 12oz bottle. Creamy tan head. Thick black pour. Roasted malt and coffee nose. Big bitter coffee flavor offset by a strong amount of malt. Really nice.

Aromas of plum, cherry, dark chocolate and oats. Seems to be a touch of banana around the edges as well. Tastes include plum, dark cherry, espresso, and caramel up front. Big char and spicy, earthy hops follow. That unique spicy/sour rye flavor is there as well. Bittersweet chocolate and smoke on the finish. Slight bourbon-like quality. I occasionally got a very noticeable fig flavor in the aftertaste. The more you drank, the more you knew how much work was put into it. Aromas moved around, the flavors shifted delicately from sip to sip, and the mouthfeel was smooth and lightly viscous. I would have again in a heartbeat.

The appearance was a nice dark brown/black color with a one finger off white foamy head that hangs around for a good one minute and slowly dies at a nice pace leaving some light trickling lacing. The smell was rich and malty through some nice Belgian spices adequately gracing my nose. The taste was sweet and luscious with some nice dark fruits amplifying the Belgian spices that came out in the nose that ends up adding a decent chocolate background coming out in the aftertaste and leading to a dry finish. On the palate, it sits about a medium and has an acceptable harshness pervading through on my mouth and tongue, nothing obscure just noticeable. Overall, I say this is a wonderful Belgian Dark Stout well worthy of coming back to.

Bottle. Black with good brown head. Aroma: Heavy on dark fruits, chocolate, mild coffee and cocoa. Taste: Roasted malts, smoke, bit rye, dark fruits, yeast, chocolate and alcohol. More this warms up, more alcohol comes up on taste. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Bitter, dry, ashy and again alcoholic finish. Somehow very alcoholic, and that plummy Belgian yeast is just not my thing.

(12oz. bottle) - One finger tan head w/large bottles. Lots of bottles coating the inside of the glass. Dark brown, bordering on black, body. Mild aroma. Signature Belgian yeast character in the flavor. Traits of cocoa powder and raisins. Alcohol finish. Reminds me more of a Quad than an Imperial Stout. Still, mighty tasty.
