3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
750 ml bottle
A beer that is somehow better than the sum of its parts I am glad it now comes in a smaller bottle. 12 ounces is enough for me in a single sitting. Part of the Smokestack Series this is perhaps on my favorite to date. I may have to revisit it in the future.
Aroma / Appearance - An inky black base supports a pillar of light creamy head. Black coffee, malts, and dry dark fruits offer up the experience of a heady stout or a moderate imperial stout (depending on your expectations going in). While this bottle might have been a bit past its prime it was still pleasing to the senses.
Flavor / Palate - Smoky raspberries prime the palate for a fruity explosion of malts. Ashy notes tickle the throat as well before it carries into a dry finish. The mouthfeel may be a little on the thin side. Even so the total package is nice for a beer that you can purchase many places for an affordable price. Pick up a single first from your local store and decide for yourself.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from bottle to glass. Jet black with thick creamy tan head. Aroma is toffee, roasted barley, smoked meat, plums, slight esters, soy. Mouthfeel is nice with good carbonation combined with medium light body. Taste is sweet initially with a salty and slight astringent following. A nice CO2 sharpness in the finish. Overall, this is a really nice brew although slightly metallic.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark black pour. Chickory coffee, cocoa, and ash in the nose. Taste adds spice and wood from the rye and some of the yeast shines through. Rich and thick. Tasty.

4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Dark brown opaque color with a brown head, and a caramel whiskey aroma. Feels fizzy on the tongue, and has notes of coffee whiskey and hops. Very complex flavor.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Batch 2010-1, Best by 01/13
Poured to NB globe.
A: Pours a deep black stout with single finger head which retires leaving half as much in a latte color. The beer retains the head throughout the life. Thick, resounding lacing.
S: Dark, cocoa, malts, coffee. Moderate hints of copper smell which is a hare offsetting. Hint of lacto smell. Cautious about tasting this one...
T: Dark, dry, malty beer. Hints of licorice, anise, malts, cocoa, espresso. Okay, the perception earlier of lacto (I believe) was the belgian yeast showing through. It’s a good flavor, but not the best as far as IS’s. Rye adds a woody flavor here.
M: Thick, viscous, sticky beer. Nice, moderate carbonation. Heavy body.
D: I would rather have shared this with others. Not great. I think the I am disappointed in the yeast addition to this beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours almost black with 2 fingers of a tan head that is a mixture of tight bubbles and rocky ones. Aroma is wonderful. Dark fruit, figs, plums, caramel, sugar, burnt sugar, roast, espresso notes. Taste is the nose with some slight rye spice. Good one guys!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours very dark brown to black with a thick mocha head that settles to a thick ring and leaves some sudsy lace. Multi-layered nose involves toasted malt, dark fruit, figs, cherries, leather, dark chocolate, spice. Quite sweet flavor, pretty bitter also, slightly tart. Full bodied, viscous yet fairly actively carbed, slippery, with a toasty, spicy, and tart finish. A lot going on here, but it’s well balanced and plenty nuanced. The Belgian twist makes this unique.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Falska från systembolaget. Svart med ljusbrunt skum. Rostad doft med lakrits, choklad och torkad fruk. Smak av lakrits och kaffe och choklad. Något bitter och aningen spritig. Ganska lätt i munnen. Ingen tjock historia. Måttligt imponerad.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours nearly opaque with nominal head and lace, the aroma is malt and coffee and chicory, maybe some chocolate. More of that in the flavor, and the smokey malt quality was enjoyable, but the label boasted of other flavors I’d notice that I just didn’t pick up on (Creme brulee? Really? OK, sure, whatever.) This was a really tasty stout, but there are a ton of really tasty stouts out there. That can be both a good and a bad thing.
