COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barley, wheat, rye and oats provide the foundation for this big stout. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, creme brulee. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish. Such a robust beer stands well by itself, but also makes a wonderful end-note to any rich, indulgent meal. Discover the secret of combining this roasty ale to sweets, by pairing with dark chocolate or caramel, or even by pouring it over ice cream.

Pours a dark chocolate brown that appears black in the glass with a two finger, frothy beige head that very slowly fades into a lasting cap/ring. Sporadic streaks of lacing left behind. Slightly smokey roasted malt aroma with a subtle earthy hop presence that counters the dark malt and chocolate. Hints of dark chocolate, toast, rye, oatmeal and some dark fruit. Thinner bodied than expected, slightly watered down with soft carbonation up front and a deeply roasted malt character that provides a lingering bitterness. Hints of burnt toast, oatmeal, dark chocolate and coffee bean. There’s also some rye sweetness along with some subtle dark fruit notes. The ABV is well masked but this beer is a bit one- dimensional and boring.

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2012 Smoky, chocolaty, and quite strong. Kind of resembles a porter, in my non-expert opinion

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Indianapolis. Slow gusher. Pours a dark brown color with a large dark brown frothy head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, lots of fruits including banana, strawberry and grape, brown sugar, treacle, anise. The taste is roasted malts, bitter hops, nuts, spice, plum, grape, coffee. The bitterness lingers a bit. Medium bodied, assertive carbonation. Nice beer.

12 oz. bottle from a 4-pack. Purchased at Kappy’s in Malden, MA. Beautiful presentation into a snifter. Full, thick beige head that lingered and left sheets of lacing down the side. Nose is dark fruit, roasted malt and chocolate. Nice full body. Flavors of chocolate, espresso, fig, plum and ash with a smooth lingering smoky finish. Chalky mouthfeel. Nice layers of flavors. I don’t pick-up any ABV. This snifter went down easy, went for another bottle right away. This is my kind of stout. It was worth every penny I spent.

I think I’ve found my new favorite stout. :) My overall impression was of a delightful, dry dark chocolate... nicely balanced between sweet and bitter. Texture was creamy with light carbonation. The substantial alcohol fit in perfectly without noticeable burn. Color was a rich deep black. I loved it.

Black with a medium-sized tan head that falls to a milky froth. Thin, even lacing beautifully coats the side of the glass. Nose of milk chocolate, lightly charred oak, bourbon and whiffs of balsamic vinegar rounded out by brown sugar, dates and roasted nuts. Very subdued sweetness with notes of red plums, light metallics, mild alcohol, dusty grains and a little cardboard. Overall, this is a nice imperial with a great balance of sweetness to roastiness that hides its alcohol relatively well. Dangerously easy to drink.

Pours black with a copper tint in direct light. Chocolatey tan head. Poured a large frothy head inch and half. Looks very good in a glass and the head holds for a long time . Aroma of roasted malt, smoke and faint hint of chocolate. Flavor is dark chocolate , mild coffee, something fruity is detectable. Medium bodied. Finishes clean a really good stout and 9.7 alcohol and the flavor masks it well

Pours black with dark brown head and good retention. Aroma is anise, baker’s chocolate, Belgian yeast spice, bleu cheese, figs, plum, roast. Taste is aggressively roasted coffee, bubblegum banana buried deep within, tons of Belgian spice but comes across as waaay to roasty. Body is light, creamy, highly carbonated, complex roasted fruity bitter finish. Overall, not really my thing. This seemed a bit unbalanced.
