Barley, wheat, rye and oats provide the foundation for this big stout. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, creme brulee. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish. Such a robust beer stands well by itself, but also makes a wonderful end-note to any rich, indulgent meal. Discover the secret of combining this roasty ale to sweets, by pairing with dark chocolate or caramel, or even by pouring it over ice cream.

355 ml bottle @ home, July 08, 2014. Beer from a tulip glass. Beer bought @ "Vinmonopolet Vika", Oslo. Black in color with a beige head and medium carbonation. A bit alcohol up front. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and some soy sauce and dark dried fruits. Tastes malt and coffee and has a bit crisp and bittersweet touch. Nice for us who love coffee. Probably even better in taste if served with some dark chocolate or a chocolate cake made of real Belgian chocolate. Tastes

A very bitter almost herbish imperial stout. Pours black with good mocha head and lacing. Thick but slick texture that doesn’t lean too much on the side of creamy or syrupy. Dark bitter chocolate and poignant roast. Light booze and a hint of caramel. There is some light sweetness on finish. Bottle.

Along with coffee, chocolate, and dark fruits, Imperial Stouts often try to play up smoky flavors. This has to be done with care, though, as smoky notes tend to be bitter and heavy. That’s not the case at all with Boulevard’s Dark Truth Stout. The smoked malt flavors are far and away the best element of this brew. Rather than being acidic, the smokiness is savory, malty, and elegant. Mingling with bitter chocolate and booze-soaked fruit, the smoke taste is complex yet highly approachable. Dark Truth would be right at home with barbecued red meat and would probably be even better with a good cigar.

Big brown head. Opaque black body. Roasty resiny soy sauce and chocolate aroma with earthy licorice notes. Dry-sweet resiny roasty chocolatey taste with spicy crisp bread and soy sauce notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, mealy, velvety smooth mouthfeel. Dry roasty resiny chocolatey aftertaste with burnt strawberry candy notes. Interesting, drinkable, and very, very nice. I really like it. (0.355l bottle, from wine monopoly, Vika, Oslo.)
