COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barley, wheat, rye and oats provide the foundation for this big stout. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, creme brulee. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish. Such a robust beer stands well by itself, but also makes a wonderful end-note to any rich, indulgent meal. Discover the secret of combining this roasty ale to sweets, by pairing with dark chocolate or caramel, or even by pouring it over ice cream.

750 mL bottle. Pours opaque with good clarity; medium-high, foamy-frothy tan to brown head with good retention. Aroma is moderate dark fruity esters, plum and fig; dark roasted malt, chocolate, oat sweetness, and rye spiciness. Medium noble spicy hops with a lightly smoked nose. Flavor is moderate bitter dark malt, roasted, chocolate, oats, and rye; good balance between malt and dark fruity esters, plum, fig, and raisin. Light smoke and vanilla, licorice; light to medium spicy hop flavor and bitterness with a dry finish. Full body, moderate-high carbonation, and a silky texture.

355ml bottle (Kaisla, Helsinki)
Practically black, small tight tan head. Nice roast aroma, some hints of bacon. Later liquorice comes over too. Super rich roasted taste, dark toast and nice mocca burntness. Sweet, but has savoury aspects too, plenty of liquorice. Not getting the 9.7% at all, even the alcohol test doesn’t reveal much - the mellow burnt liquoricey roast covers everything Was a bit cold, so the palate was quite crisp and carbonated. I prefered this after lots of swirling. Does have some nice ale esters, but they’re most obvious in the burps! Finish is probably the best part, that roast is nice and bitter chocolatey.

Bottle… Pours nearly black with glints of mahogany and a mid-sized, cappuccino-colored head. The complex aroma offers fresh whole grain dough, singed caramel, dark chocolate, espresso, molasses, hints of dates and plum, a whisper of licorice and a rumor of pouch tobacco. Medium to full-bodied with nearly expired carbonation. Flavors of sweet black chocolate and gooey caramel intermingle with dried dark fruits and unsweetened espresso. Finishes carbonaceous and bittersweet, then winds up fairly dry. This sample was exposed to oxygen for a good while. I’ll give it another go when I get a replacement bottle.

Brown pour, light tan head. Light molasses, rye and some chocolate. Flavor has the rye and hops along with some chocolate and the creaminess from the oats. Lightly flavor of peat as well. I look forward to trying a big pour of this. Very nice and very different.

Bottle @ Dan’s house. 2010 vintage. Black appearance with a dark brown head. A touch fruity (plum, grape), mild dark chocolate, light caramel aroma. Earthy, grassy hoppy, roasty dark chocolate malty, anise, Belgian yeasty, mild coffee, bandaid flavor with a touch of smoke on the finish. Honestly, I really don’t enjoy stouts with a Belgian yeast.

Bottle at Freshcraft, Denver - 31/05/12. Pitch black with a thin tan head. Sweet malt nose backed up with chocolate and dark fruits. Fruits come out in the taste, roasty, caramel, bitter chocolate. Top end of medium in body, moderate carbonation, hits the spot!

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Indianapolis. Slow gusher. Pours a dark brown color with a large dark brown frothy head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, lots of fruits including banana, strawberry and grape, brown sugar, treacle, anise. The taste is roasted malts, bitter hops, nuts, spice, plum, grape, coffee. The bitterness lingers a bit. Medium bodied, assertive carbonation. Nice beer.

Bottle thankfully shared by a friend, as I dropped mine on the garage floor a few months back. The beer pours black with a medium dark brown head that recedes steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Roasty malt, coffee and dark fruits in the nose. Full-bodied with a roasty character of malt and coffee, along with notes of chocolate and a touch of spice. The finish is chocolatey malt with an espresso aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
