3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottles at home. Looks like a big bad stout right out of the bottle -- dark as night with a creamy nutmeg head. Get more of the roasted deep red/purple fruits (fig and plum) from the nose, some floral hop character, and big notes of roasted coffee notes. Lots going on taste-wise and the brewers’ description nails it: definite espresso (felt in the palate, too), roasted figs/plums, some yeastiness, and surprisingly intense floral hops that provide some balance to the intensity of the malt side of things.
Overall I like this beer, though I think the hops dominate the finish in a way that squashes the other flavors too quickly. Enjoyable while it lasts, but I’m not sure I’ll be back since there are so many others to try in this category.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
I’ve been holding onto the bottle for quite a while, partly because it’s hard for me to find this, and partly because there are some things that just need a time and a place. I don’t know why it was today, but it was today for the Dark Truth Stout. I open the bottle and bring the neck to my nose, inhaling in short, sharp breaths at first and then long, lung-expanding draws. The aroma is deep, complex, full of dark, over-ripe plums, dark-roasted coffee and char. There’s a mellow vanilla that soothes the savage smokiness in the cooler brew, but can’t fight the battle as the beer warms. -- Its deep, nut-brown liquid is blanketed with a dense, milk-chocolate head about a finger deep, frothy and soft. I tip the glass and draw a swallow through that head and between my lips, allowing it to wash over my teeth and gums, flooding my mouth with warmth, despite the temperature of the beer. Immediately the refined complexity of the liquid transforms into a more primal experience, exposing itself with a smooth, dark veracity that divulges all the layers of the aroma in a less complex form. There is a small sting on my gums, a side effect, for me, of the rye, and a slight dryness on the edges of my tongue. The flavor is weighted with more tobacco than the aroma, and as the beer warms, I find the Belgian yeast in the background, delivering spices and that unmistakable funk that was there in the beginning, but with no apparent source. Now I find that source. It took a certain temperature to be aware of it, but damn, now that it’s there, it’s fantastic! Another layer peeled back for my gustatory enjoyment! I had this rated, but just added another tick for overall. A phenomenal finish, smooth and unassuming; everything about this beer disappear in just a few minutes. A fantastic brew. Now I’m glad I waited...now I’m glad I bought two. Wow. Yum. --

Flarra. Tydligt syrlig i doften. Smakar rätt sött komplext som om den är lagrad på fat. Kanske den är?. Rätt torr eftersmak å litet inslag av syra å kaffe. Inte så chokladig som många Imp Stout.. Tyvär för syrlig eftersmak .,

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
No light, just black. A tan head greets you, but it too leaves. Still black. Fresh cherries, dried fruit, chocolate, and a hint of Belgian yeast fill the nose. This is bittersweet defined. Middle is Hershey’s syrup in a cup of strong coffee. Finish feels boozy, but the tongue is all about sweet and smoky. A dangerous beer you should try.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
a bit boozy bourbon with malt and a touch of plum and prune tempered with a hint of smoke and perhaps cocoa which perhaps is just a roast of the malt. refreshing with its lack of coffee, dark chocolate and ash and smoke to name a few bastardizations of where the style has gone... humming bitterness seemingly from from real hops and also nicely muted. dry finish and yeasty character puts the brew in good company. pure enjoyment and a real cigar brew

A nice big stout. Subtlety smokey but not overwhelming. A good heavy stout but not too much to handle.

4.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pour black with tan head, smells of dark fruit, maybe raisin and plum with some savory spice element and some slight roasted notes and dark chocolate. Taste of espresso roast, dark chocolate subtle sweetnes. Long complex finish that dance on my tounge. I think this is a great beer to end the night with.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle in Baltimore. Black pour, foamy tan head. Aroma is roasty, chocolate, coffee, some licorice and quite herbal. Flavor is a bit dry, bitter and with quite some carbonation. Not bad at all, but also a bit boring.
