Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

Huge beige head. Barely translucent deep dark red body. Roasty resiny tropical fruit aroma with earthy funky notes. Dry-sweet funky tropical fruit taste with roasty earthy notes. Mid-bodied. Sharp, fizzy mouthfeel. Dryish tropical fruit and roasted malts aftertaste with resiny dusty chocolatey notes. Quite good, but the flavours donít quite mix, and too fizzy and funky. (0.75l bottle, from Systembolaget, Nordstan.)

Bottle at home. Has a black colour with a medium light beige soapy head. Very IPA-like aroma with fruity hops, grapefruit and some soy sauce in the background. Has a rich taste with a distinct hoppy touch. Slick mouth feel, and a medium bitterness. A well-balanced Black IPA but more a rich IPA than a stout. Not much roastedness in this.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2013 Brown. Small white head. Citric hoppy aroma. Lots of flavour on the palet with balanced bitterness that lasts. Over all a great beer with great balance between malts and hops.

Deep murky brown in the glass. Big offwhite head. Alot of hops in the nose, alongside a roasty maltet aroma. Rich mouthfeel with alot of carbonation. Roasty and sweet taste, medium bitter. It?s well over a year old, so probably not as bitter as it?s ?supposed to be?.

Black and malty, but more interesting than most in this category. Do I really need to write 75 characters? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle .75. Black. Initial nose is very hoppy, all-american cascady- like. Pines with green lime citrus backing. Then the chocolate roastyness kicks in. Body is full, bitter, soft creamy. Piney hops, dark roasted maltyness. The roasted flavors are a bit thin compared to the hoppyness though. The finish is more pines than the roasted dry chocolate thatís also there. Thereís some darker soft maltyness that could be the rye, but hard to say. Overall a good black IPA. But Iím still waiting for someone to perfect the style and somehow set the standard. This was (for the abv) a bit on the thinner, hoppyer, side.

Location/Date:Bottle on June 13th split with Dave and Kravitz.

Appearance: Pours a black opaque with light white head.
Aroma: Aroma of faint roasted malt, rye.
Taste: Light bitterness, medium right, light roast, very balanced. Accessible.
Palate:Medium body, smooth, not carbonation, lightly chewy. Really nice.

Summary: A really nice beer, particularly in the palate. Not as bitter as I was expecting, nor as rye laden in the taste, but really nice and well balanced.

Excited when purchased @ Total Wine in Chapel Hill, NC. Huge, creamy, lacy, coffee-colored head. Great aroma. Roasted, malty front. Hints of citrus, mainly grapefruit. Consistent taste throughout. Slightly bitter end. First taste did not live up to (my self promoted) hype. Enjoyed the beer, not as much as I had hoped or as much as others.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2014 14.06.2013, 0,75l bottle @ home:
Nice creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly roasted, dark malts, hops, rubber, caramel, coffee, leafs, hay, pine needles, licorice. Taste is hops, dark malts, grass, wet leafs, burnt caramel, rubber, alcohol, pine needles. Longlasting bitterness, slightly "harsh". Fair enough, Iíve had better BIPAís.
