3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml bottle from Blanchard’s in Allston, MA for $10.50. Pitch black in my Allagash chalice. Thick off white head that slowly dissipated after several minutes. Nose is indeed roasted grain with a light pine essence. When I type that the flavors are light, I intend that to be a compliment. Because a lot of different flavors are here. Chocolate, coffee notes, burnt pine needles, roasted grain and deep roasted barley. The pine bitterness is slightly lingering yet, really not intense at all. The flavors meld exceptionally well together. I shared this bottle yet I was craving more after a glass and a half. Worth the $10.50. Very tasty.

3.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 20/20
Blackish brown pour with a gigantic head that refuses to dissipate. Smell is citrus, herbs, cocoa, bread. Literally the head won’t die so I suppose I can’t drink it.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Rye is everywhere these days (3/11/2013) it seems, and the use of rye here is unremarkable, if the beer is excellent for other reasons. First, the rye is most present on the beer’s finish, with a dry, roasted, black bread presence. But the aromas and front bite of the beer are bright with peach, lemon, and nectarine fruit. The depth of color belies a lightness of flavor and a fine, light palate.

Pours unclear somewhat murky brown amber with a creamy beige head. The aroma creamy nutty malts and hops blended well, hops overtaking for sure though, so nice in the nose. Flavor of roasted malt and hops again, just like in the nose, with hops showcasing well.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a deep, dark black with huge, huge, huge frothy head (be careful when pouring or this one will wind up all over the counter!). Aroma of hops and grain (rye). Flavor is dominated by the hops combined with roasted grain and a nice, sweet, smooth undertone of malt. Very full mouthfeel with a clean, bitter finish.
