Kind of a muddy medium brown. Aroma is toasty, touch piney, hint of citrus, bit fizzy but with lots of bitterness. Quite bready on the malts.

On tap at JL Beers. Smooth and full-bodied, not overly hoppy, some rye spiciness. Nicely balanced, but could be happier. Quite enjoyable.

The Smokestack lineup has produced some of the best beers Iíve ever tasted. In addition to being mind-numbingly awesome in terms of flavor, these brews also tend to feature a unique take on the traditional ingredients. Calling this ale a Black Rye IPA, Boulevard has satisfied both of those criteria in the best way. The incorporation of rye is a fantastic idea. You know it as soon as you give this brew a whiff. The tanginess of the rye is a great match for the aromas of smoky malt and fresh, citrusy hops. It all makes for some great smells but the taste is even bitter. Coffee boldness, hop bitterness, and rye spiciness all converge to create a one-of-a-kind bite. The rye steals the show yet it still manages to be cohesive with the other ingredients. You get the usual flavors a Black IPA, but the grainy black pepper spice brings something new to the palate. Black IPAís already feature an eclectic variety of strong flavors, so I would never think of adding rye to the mix. In the case of Grainstorm, though, it just works so damn well.

A- Pepper, subtle rye, pine, citrus, hoppy.
A- Black color, dark liquid, tan head.
T- Rye, pepper, spices, pine, bitter, roasty.
P- Full body, average texture, high carbonation, bitter finish.
O- The rye makes this beer in my opinion. Itís subtle on the nose but there in a fair amount on the palate. Lots of peppery and spicy goodness that adds to the bitterness.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours blackish with a tan head. Taste roasted malt, earthy. I thought this was ok. I could drink this again.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Good blend. Decent roasted and hoppy aroma. Dark coffee brown color with a slightly tan head. Medium weight with strong carbonation. It had a nice blend of flavors consisting of roasted malts, spicy rye and bittering hops. It had some piney and floral hop notes as well. Itís finished somewhat dry. A beer to definitely try.
