3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml. corked and caged. Batch number 2012-1. BBD 08-2013. Pours a thick gradually collapsing, very light beige head, with extensive lacing, over a hazy brown (SRM 28) body.......nose is pine, grapefruit peel, chocolate, coffee......taste is pine, citrus peel, light chocolate, hints of coffee, rye spiciness, pineapple tones, finishing with a moderate citrus, pine bitterness.....mouth feel medium, alcohol hidden, carbonation initially fills the mouth with foam, later adds a light spritz. Other than the absolutely enormous carbonation, which took a bit of time to resolve, this was a nice example of this great style. The hops were very present in both aromas and flavors, but the malt backbone asserted itself when necessary. The result was good. Too bad the carbonation was so high. BJCP 8/2/15/3/7

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
I expected a lot out of this one, as Smokestacks are some of my favorite beers. But like Boulevard did with the regular 80 Acre, it feels like they toned this beer way back for the average beer drinker. It didnít taste much different than Single Wide to me, which isnít a bad thing but not worthy of being a Smokestack. Great color and aroma, but a decidedly average IPA to me in the end. Not worth the extra cost.

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2013 750ml bottle. Pours dark ruby with subtle hints of brown. Aroma of pine, roasted grain, hay, dark fruit. Flavor of pine, rye, dried fruit, peat, touch of citrus. A crazy mix of flavors from various grains.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Iím a big fan of this beer. I knew I would be even before I drank it considering its "black," "rye," and an "IPA," three of my favorite beer qualifiers. Also, Boulevard has been on a roll for years now, churning out more and more interesting and well-designed beers. This is one of the best. Smooth, spicy, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, piney hops.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black with huge, dense khaki head that reduces but never really goes away and leaves a nice film lacing. The aroma has very strong grapefruit and citrus hops notes. The taste followed the aroma with great grapefruit IPA flavor with some roasted malt and rye in the background. It has a pretty strong bitter finish. I is full bodied and thick with some light carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a black color with off white head. Hoppy, citrus, grassy, grapefruit aromas. Slight roasty, rye, citrus, hoppy flavor. Pretty good, but not your typical black ipa.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours black. Canít see any light through this one... Not jet black. Just black. Poured this one very gently into a tulip glass, yet it still develops a huge pillowy beige head. The rye comes is very forward, comes through immediately, along with some grapefruit, and if you bury your nose in the glass, just a faint whiff of windex. Initial sip is grain, dry rye, herbal hops, hints of spice, a little chocolate, and a little coffee. Mouthfeel is really light. Not a dense beer at all. Aftertaste is bitter, herbal hops.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours brown black with a mound of thick froth. The aroma is musty grains and a light grapefruit and wet blanket. The body is robust and matches the filling carbonation crafting a broad space for more modestly displayed flavors. Notes of mellow sweet grapefruit and some orange peel, a herbal earthy hop bite with the softly appropriated roasted barley and rye. There is a hint of peppercorn and lingering tingle of grainy spice but it blends well in the myriad hops and earthy grain mash up. More bitter as it warms, not my bag totally but boulevard makes it all make sense. Really solid brew for style, bright hops dark grains.
