COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

Rye is everywhere these days (3/11/2013) it seems, and the use of rye here is unremarkable, if the beer is excellent for other reasons. First, the rye is most present on the beer’s finish, with a dry, roasted, black bread presence. But the aromas and front bite of the beer are bright with peach, lemon, and nectarine fruit. The depth of color belies a lightness of flavor and a fine, light palate.

Black with a big resilient tan head and lots of lacing. Aroma of citrus, resin, rye, and pine. Taste is roasty and spicy and resinous and mildly bitter. Smooth, medium-full bodied, and slightly dry.

Translucent black with a medium sized, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast, burnt wood, floral hops, pine, and light citrus. Taste of roast, nuts, citrus, pine, and a hoppy finish.

Pours unclear somewhat murky brown amber with a creamy beige head. The aroma creamy nutty malts and hops blended well, hops overtaking for sure though, so nice in the nose. Flavor of roasted malt and hops again, just like in the nose, with hops showcasing well.

Pours a deep, dark black with huge, huge, huge frothy head (be careful when pouring or this one will wind up all over the counter!). Aroma of hops and grain (rye). Flavor is dominated by the hops combined with roasted grain and a nice, sweet, smooth undertone of malt. Very full mouthfeel with a clean, bitter finish.

TAR (2475) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - MAR 5, 2013
Deep russet-purple. Fat dollop of lathery khaki forth adorns the glass. Brightly hoppy nose of lemon oil, tangerine pith, mango, kumquat, grass clippings, and peppery phenolics. Hint of dark breadcrust, dried plums, and resin. Fluffy carbonation. Initially soft, explosively hoppy and tropical-laden. Looming scratch of firm rye vivifies the spicy kumquat bitterness which emerges with composure and grace. Faintest whisper of chocolate mousse dots the supple wheat-infused core while a gentle pureed-plum sweetness buds and consequently obscures some of the more delicate hop flavors. Although well-cloaked by profuse juiciness, a dab of aspirin manages to taint some of the overall cleanness. Burly wheat backbone bolsters the body with a pleasant slickness, though a gooey Simcoe-like mango tackiness adds obtrusive weight. Dusting of pale malt cleans things up and restores structure while providing a cookielike effect and just enough firmness to displace some of the borderline-cloying mango. Finishes with a delightfully restrained bitterness, yet complexly hoppy and mango-centered as a deeply spicy hop punctuation dovetails with a vibrant plum jam emergence. One of the more elegant examples of an often brutish style. The bottle-conditioning has imparted additional estery sparkle and nuance which beautifully coincides with the surprisingly reserved demeanor of this beer. Another praiseworthy effort from Boulevard.
