COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

The color is a clear garnet with a large light tan head, and the aroma is rye with resin and floral hops. The taste is quite bitter, slightly sour, and a touch umami, but the heavy bitterness doesn’t linger, which is nice. There is a average carbonation, medium body, slick texture, and a slightly bitter finish.

Pours dark brown almost black, amber tint when held up to light. Big tan head. Citrus, resin, pine aroma with hints of roasted malt, chocolate and rye. Sweet malt start, quickly disappears. Followed by sharp bitter resiny pine flavor and finishes with a roasted malt flavor and a hint of rye. Really enjoy.

Too bitter! Kind of a diluted IPA with hints of rye, wheat, and resinous hop. Flavor has no sweetness and a plain sour malt note. Kind of hard to drink with the flavor and high carbonation combined.

750 ml bottle, best by 11/2014. Pours brown with a huge and growing creamy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roast, sweet chocolate malt, rye and piney hops.

The flavor is sweet chocolate malt, spicy rye with big roast piney bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little watery.

Overall, a nice black IPA with lots of piney hops, roast and some rye.

Had this a beer, bourbon, and bar-b-q fest and it was by far the best brew there. Pours like porter, or thin stout. Smells of citrus and roasty malts. Tastes freaking amazing.

750ml bottle. Not a huge fan of IPAs but this is not bad. In fact it’s pretty good. It’s helping me get used to drinking this kind of beer. It’s dark and rich on the tongue but very hoppy and floral on the finish. Will buy again.

Cola black pour with a huge effervescent tan head when poured from the 750. Nose is lightly malted, mixed hops, and a slight hint of rye. Mouthfeel is great, with a textural crispness. Really spectacular black IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear brown pour with ring of tan head. Fruity rye character with roasty malt and good resiny bitterness. Really well done for the style. But I don’t particularly care for rye, so not really my cup of tea.

Corked and caged bottle. Opaque black that doesn’t allow any light through, topped by a large, thick light tan head. Moderate pine nose with underlying musty orange zest, accompanied by graham cracker, burnt marshmallow, and pumpernickel bread. Leathery catcher’s mitt notes up front in the flavor with light bakers chocolate, black pepper, pine tar, grapefruit rind. Moderately bitter balanced by a nicely sweet malt base. A very pleasant surprise.

P: Opaque black body with a billowing mountain top of frothy rootbeer head. Retention is dramatic and beautiful lace wraps the glass like lingerie grasping a succulent thigh. S: A thundering grain approach backed by vanilla, dark fruits, pine and citrus bitters. Black malts lace the smoldered rye and barley aroma but lacks a powerfully robust nose. T/M: Sound the alarm! The palate is attacked by a tornado of spicy rye, smoked barley and burnt dark malt. Sweet dark fruits shower down toward the end with a pine resin aftermath. Burnt toffee and a subtle dark cocoa powder provide a subtle background once warm. Body is creamy and bold with a gentle carbonation sting that creates a balanced feel. O: I simply love what Boulevard does with the Smokestack Series. I have yet to be disappointed. Grainstorm is another successful brew that i cant get enough of. A complex grain forward creation that is equally balanced. Surprisingly smooth and easy drinking. This is a beer to enjoy by the multiples. Cheers!
