COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

Black with a thin lacing of brown head. Aroma is rye, hops and slight notes of fruit. Flavor is hoppy with a sharp bite of rye undercut by some slight citrus notes. Strong roasted malt finish with just a touch of chocolate.

Corked bottle, courtesy of Keir; batch G14035-1, bb 11-2014
Near black color; compact beige head. The aroma is surprisingly fruity, with grains, cereals, bread; lovely (8+). Smooth mouthfeel, dry; strong roasted malt flavor, the acidity from the dark malts is a bit too high; strong bitterness, but any incidental hop quality is hidden. Too much ashes in the final.
Good.

Draft sample. Black in colour with medium carbonation. Classic C-hops upfront in the nose, along with cut grass and toasted and roasted malts. Malt notes come through much stronger in the mouth, with both pale malt and spicy rye playing a strong roll. Some white grapefruit notes on the back end. Slick on the palate, but with a solid amount of bitterness. Good overall.

750ml corked bottle. Pours a dark brown with a huge frothy tan head that you have to wait around for before diving in. Another great brew from Boulevard. Tasty malt sweetness with just the right amounts of ryoe and hop notes. Delicious.

Kind of a muddy medium brown. Aroma is toasty, touch piney, hint of citrus, bit fizzy but with lots of bitterness. Quite bready on the malts.

Bottle - Fresh hops and a very light roast. Cloudy brown with a decent beige head. Malty with an earthy pine hop profile. Nice and easy going.

On tap at JL Beers. Smooth and full-bodied, not overly hoppy, some rye spiciness. Nicely balanced, but could be happier. Quite enjoyable.

Deep brown with a khaki head. Nose is coffee, chocolate, light citrus hops, and more chocolate. Easy palate, roasted malts, faint hops and a smooth finish.

The Smokestack lineup has produced some of the best beers I’ve ever tasted. In addition to being mind-numbingly awesome in terms of flavor, these brews also tend to feature a unique take on the traditional ingredients. Calling this ale a Black Rye IPA, Boulevard has satisfied both of those criteria in the best way. The incorporation of rye is a fantastic idea. You know it as soon as you give this brew a whiff. The tanginess of the rye is a great match for the aromas of smoky malt and fresh, citrusy hops. It all makes for some great smells but the taste is even bitter. Coffee boldness, hop bitterness, and rye spiciness all converge to create a one-of-a-kind bite. The rye steals the show yet it still manages to be cohesive with the other ingredients. You get the usual flavors a Black IPA, but the grainy black pepper spice brings something new to the palate. Black IPA’s already feature an eclectic variety of strong flavors, so I would never think of adding rye to the mix. In the case of Grainstorm, though, it just works so damn well.

Bottle. A- Pepper, subtle rye, pine, citrus, hoppy. A- Black color, dark liquid, tan head. T- Rye, pepper, spices, pine, bitter, roasty. P- Full body, average texture, high carbonation, bitter finish. O- The rye makes this beer in my opinion. It’s subtle on the nose but there in a fair amount on the palate. Lots of peppery and spicy goodness that adds to the bitterness.
