Dark brown with ruby highlights, insanely huge khaki head with great retention and good lacing. Aromas of grass and grain with a bit of rye spiciness. Taste follows nose with grassy notes, wet grain and rye bread. Decent amount of bitterness that is balanced by the spiciness and finishes rather dry. Mouthfeel is slick and medium bodied with average carbonation. Good beer that showcases the grain and has a nice rye element.

Clear brown pour with ring of tan head. Fruity rye character with roasty malt and good resiny bitterness. Really well done for the style. But I don’t particularly care for rye, so not really my cup of tea.

Corked and caged bottle. Opaque black that doesn’t allow any light through, topped by a large, thick light tan head. Moderate pine nose with underlying musty orange zest, accompanied by graham cracker, burnt marshmallow, and pumpernickel bread. Leathery catcher’s mitt notes up front in the flavor with light bakers chocolate, black pepper, pine tar, grapefruit rind. Moderately bitter balanced by a nicely sweet malt base. A very pleasant surprise.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
P: Opaque black body with a billowing mountain top of frothy rootbeer head. Retention is dramatic and beautiful lace wraps the glass like lingerie grasping a succulent thigh.
S: A thundering grain approach backed by vanilla, dark fruits, pine and citrus bitters. Black malts lace the smoldered rye and barley aroma but lacks a powerfully robust nose.
T/M: Sound the alarm! The palate is attacked by a tornado of spicy rye, smoked barley and burnt dark malt. Sweet dark fruits shower down toward the end with a pine resin aftermath. Burnt toffee and a subtle dark cocoa powder provide a subtle background once warm. Body is creamy and bold with a gentle carbonation sting that creates a balanced feel.
O: I simply love what Boulevard does with the Smokestack Series. I have yet to be disappointed. Grainstorm is another successful brew that i cant get enough of. A complex grain forward creation that is equally balanced. Surprisingly smooth and easy drinking. This is a beer to enjoy by the multiples. Cheers!

Bomber. Pours dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma and flavor were roasted malt, some chocolate, pumpernickel bread, some spicy rye, lots of citrusy, piney hops. Nice twist on the black IPA, what with the range of cereal malt flavors and textures.

0.75l corked bottle. A massive head on this one! Deep milk chocolate milkshake colored. This on top of a deep dark brown near black body. Smells nice with traces of licorice, gunpowder, fresh hops, citrus, a little bit of coffee and dark near roasted malts. Smells quite good. Sweet dark flavors. Some hops shines through the darkness in the end. It has a light oily mouthfeel with a average carbonation level. Sweet licorice, rask roasted malts, pumpernickel bread and it feels smooth not to overpowering and really well balanced. Enjoyable. 10.08.2013

A bit disappointed as usual. I was really hoping this would be one I dug, but Boulevard is overrated and depends on marketing to make the sales vs. actually good beer.

Bottle. Orange, rye malt, and pine aroma. Dark brown with moderate head. Sweet orange rye malt and moderately bitter spruce flavor. Pretty tasty but would have liked if the rye came out more.
