COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

When you open a bottle of beer, and the smell of the hops hits you before you pour the beer, you know that a treat to the senses is coming. This was one of those times. The smell of grapefruit became stronger with beer having been liberated from the bomber, but oddly did not get much more intense while nosing the glass. The look was as dark as a stout, but the head formation was much more massive, at three plus fingers thick. The head did not seem to go anywhere at all till I typed all this. The taste was very complex, with a constant interplay of light and dark malts and hops. There were notes of licorice, banana, coffee, dark toasted bread, grapefruit, and iced tea flying across the tongue in rapid succession. There was not a lot of heft to the body though, and the finish was a little watered down. I also did not notice much of a rye influence, as the dark malt seemed a lot more assertive. Boulevard produces another winner. What a surprise..not.

Olmost black with a light brown head - Nice malt aroma with roasted notes and there is some hops in the aroma as well - Nice malt body with a nice hop profile that has bitterness - The bitterness from hops goes into the finish - This was nice

Pours near black with reddish hue on the edges - absurdly robust and resistant head that seems to gain depth with time (seriously, had to discard some, else I’d still be waiting to try it an hour later). Aroma is a balance of sweet and bittering hops...mildly resinous, spicy (peppery), yeasty - interesting stuff. Flavor is solid with the balance of sweet malts up front quickly getting slapped aside from the bittering hops...slight citrus note along with a good dose of roast and spice. Palate is medium bodied - one could argue thin for the flavor. Very nice offering...

28-JUN-2013, bottle @Yespr tasting. Almost clear with lasting tan, creamy head. Weak aroma of roast and a little hops. Taste the same. A weak Black IPA.

shame on us for not checking the date, but shame on city beer SF for selling year old expired hoppy beer. it was still ok, which leads me to believe it would have been quite nice 9-12 months ago, but it was best by 11/14, and it showed. slight bitterness, but the hop balance is gone. nice chocolate and roast on the malt...slightly overcarbonated like a lot of Blvd beers, but has potential. will update score if I get to try a fresh one.

Bottle during RBWG. Pours a cloudy brown with small beige head. The aroma is strong roast and pine. Medium mouth with rye, roast, pine, light bitterness, very good.

Draft. Aroma of orange and malt. Flavors are citrus, mocha and a little sweet, juicy something... maybe that’s some orange and the rye, which is otherwise understated. Really nice.

From a bottle. Thanks Joe and Kaile! Pours very dark brown with a thick, bubbly beige head and lots of lacing. Tastes like dry toast, burnt malt, dry grains, dry grapefruit and light pine hops. Light/medium body and carbonation. Smells like roasted malt, burnt toast, dry grains, and dry citrus.

750m poured a dark brown to black hue w/ huge foamy tan head and minor lacing. Moderate piney hop aroma. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a bold bitter finish of long duration. Tastes are floral and pine hop, peppery rye, and light roasty malt. Full bodied. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml from Whole Foods. Pours a very dark reddish black brown color with a large tan head. A nice nose of toast, rye, citrus. A light spicy rye bite, citrus, pine, fairly dry toasted malts. The spicy rye lingers with oranges. A bit thin. Oddly enough, it seems thin to me. Hmm. Very nice overall.
