Like India Pale Ale, the classic Imperial Stouts were originally brewed with high levels of alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, wheat, rye, oats, and spelt. Robust grain and coffee flavors are counterbalanced by date and plum notes from the Scottish yeast. To add extra complexity and depth, this Imperial Stout is made up of a blend of freshly brewed beer and several barrel-aged beers, carefully balanced. Za Vas!

En riktigt god Stout med en fin mörk färg. En god smak som man vill ha av en Stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Iím reviewing the 2014 version aged in whiskey barrels. Good strong aroma of whiskey, oak, roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and leather. Appearance is just what a stout should be. Completely black with a light brown head that fades away to nothing relatively quickly. Taste is a big time rush of whiskey, dark chocolate and plum up front with a hoppy and slightly bitter finish. No booze burn although the smell was quite boozy. The palate is absolutely perfect and may be the star of the show. Thick and velvety, extremely well done by Boulevard.

Black with big tan head. Nose is grainy, roast, booze, a bit of barrel. Taste is quite dark fruity, raisin and fig, I get some grains, a bit of barrel, it's a bit hot. This is more quad than RIS to me i think. It's pretty good.

Draft. Aroma of milky coffee. Flavor is of sweet coffee, kind of like a Cuban-style cup. Obviously Iím in the minority here, but that level of sweetness in a stout, both in aroma and on my palette, isnít my thing.

Bottle at Julienís Emptying The Closet Before Moving Back To Canada tasting, tfs Julien! With JulienHuxley, Caesar & Borresteijn. 2013 edition. Black color. Uneven brown head. Aromaís of berries, sugar, some roast. Retronasal: roast, berries, sweetness, mocha. Flavor is moderate sweet, roasted, berries. Strong alcohol feel. Medium bodied. Finishes with more roast. Nice, but not as good as anticipated.

Tap at Republic in Minneapolis. Holy cow, what a beer! Dark dense pour with a tan head. Chocolate, mild coffee, oak, bourbon, some vanilla sweetness. Slick dense palate. Smooth and easy drinking, yet insanely flavorful and aromatic. Could smell it from 3 feet away. Awesome.

Bottle. Very thick dark pour with a brown head. Chocolate and booze nose. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Big dark chocolate taste with oak and alcohol.

An almost sour note in the nose initially, a hint of coconut and almond. A hint of roast. Opaque with a red tinted light brown head. A touch of tanginess mixing with a roast note, with alcohol gently peeking through. A note of bitterness offsets the sweet flavor of residual malt sweetness. Finishes fairly clean considering the bold flavors.

Black with a big brown head. Aroma of roast, cherry, chocolate, vanilla, and whiskey barrel. Taste is rich, sweet, and roasty with a nice bit of the barrel. Booze taste is minimal. Full bodied, but relatively not that thick, smooth, slightly tingly. Average for a good imperial stout; Quite good but not ultimately a standout for the style.

This one is too sweet for me. Tap @ Pour. Deep brown with mocha head. Smells like molasses & perfume. Very sweet, almost cloying.
