Like India Pale Ale, Imperial Stouts were originally brewed with high percentages of malt and hops to help them withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, wheat, rye, and oats. A portion of the batch has been aged in whiskey barrels, then blended with fresh ale before bottling. Za Vas!

Tasting at Bruce’s. Thanks to Lorna. Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Palate is airy and slightly soft with very fine carbonation. Spice. Licorice. Light dark malt cream and a touch of cofffee. Tangy dark fruits well integrated with a little tangy whisky. Spicy finish, smooth and dry,

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Paul. Pours deep black-brown with a thick, tight beige head. The nose has lots of burnt wood, toasted marshmallows, cocoa. Medium to big sweet flavor, some more burnt wood, cedar, rich chocolate, torched earth, dark cherries. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish with sticky chocolate, more burnt earth, torched wood, dark fruit, alcohol. Very nice. Deep, robust.

Corked & Caged 750 ml Bottle of 2013 Vintage. Dark brownish black pour capped with a thick layer of cappuccino foam. Aroma blends roasted malt, burnt dark sugars and chocolate with a bit of vanilla and charred oak around the edges. Aggressive notes of bittersweet chocolate, whiskey and molasses upfront along with some espresso, black cherry, dark fruits and smoky roasted malt toward the end. Mouthfeel is naturally thick and creamy with moderate carbonation and just enough alcohol to hold all the rich flavors together.

Bomber bottle. Aroma is a dark dryness with some light bourbon. Appearance is black with a good size tan head. Taste is a sweet darkness with some booze. The bourbon flavor kicks in at the end. Palate is dry and boozy. Overall, a good barrel aged stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown with minimal tan head. Aroma malty grains, cocoa, lightly toasted. Full body. A little alcohol but not much. Flavor is a good balance of dryness and sweetness. Malt and grain mostly. Some cocoa/coffee. Don’t get much wood or anything from the whiskey barrels. Not as much roasted flavor as would usually find in such a stout. Don’t get me wrong this a very good beer, but I was just a little let down by the lack of complexity.
