Like India Pale Ale, the classic Imperial Stouts were originally brewed with high levels of alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, wheat, rye, oats, and spelt. Robust grain and coffee flavors are counterbalanced by date and plum notes from the Scottish yeast. To add extra complexity and depth, this Imperial Stout is made up of a blend of freshly brewed beer and several barrel-aged beers, carefully balanced. Za Vas!

Aroma has a bit of a tart fruity cherry note to it. Some balanced roast and chocolate notes. Also some apricot and plum. A light vanilla and oak character. Not much alcohol or hops in the aroma. Pours a dark brown, not quite black with little to no head that quickly recedes quickly. No lacing and little legs. Flavor starts with sweet chocolate and lots of fruit. The fruit is plum, cherry and a bit of grapes. A light roast character with a lot of sweetness. No hop flavor and light hop bitterness. No astringency at all. Light alcohol spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation. Astringency is very low and alcohol warmth is medium low. Overall this beer has a bit of a thin mouthfeel but has a really nice flavor. Very fruit forward with some chocolate but not much bourbon notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2013 vintage. Something is going on in this bottle. Poured into tulip with heavy foamy carbonation which looks like an infection may have taken root. Aroma is prunes, vanilla, cocoa, dark malts. Taste is lightly raisin vinous tart with roast and cocoa. Starting to go bad but not quite awful yet.

Bottle, 75cl corked. A dense, finger-thick tan head forms over a more or less black body. The aroma is perhaps a bit weak, but nice, with molasses, dark sugar and coffee, caramel and chocolate and some bready hints. Itís full-bodied, lighlty warming and with a nice carbonation level. Roasted malts, caramel, tar hints, alcohol, dark bread, coffee and chocolate in the flavor. A nice bitterness too, both of the roasted and malty kind, lasting for a very long time. Overall, sure a nice one, but a tad weak all the way. but very nice anyway. 150814

Bottle. Aged in whiskey barrels. Pours a black body with a dense dark brown top. Nice complex aromas of wood, whiskey, roasted grains, chocolate and coffee. The alcohol is well hidden, but itís notable. Taste is sweet with moderate roast and alcohol. Bitter finish with coffee and roasty notes. Vinous notes with dark fruits along with whiskey and oak. Body is close to full and itís slick on the palate. Avg to soft co2 levels. Quite nice this one.

750ml corked bottle pours black in color with a 2 finger light brown head that leaves some spots of lacing behind. Aroma is roasted grains and chocolate with some notes of whiskey and coffee. Taste is a roasted grain and coffee bitterness with a chocolate malty sweetness finishing with some dark fruits and whiskey. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium bodied with average carbonation. This brew is much better than I can do justice. A well crafted brew that suits the style well and is balanced nicely. Some barrel aged brews just have too much barrel and not enough beer.

Originally rated on 1/7/14 -2013 bottle.Pours jet black with a full two finger deep beige head atop that settles very slowly into a frothy mass.Aromas of dark fruit stand out most with lighter whiskey barrel notes.A smooth creamy fuller feel makes for a good sipping brew.Alot of dark fruit on the palate along with dark molasses and chocolate, there is a noticeable earthiness in the finish which was nice. Plus the barrel aging doesnít overpower the beer, but compliments it quite well. Overall its a fine Imp. Stout.
