4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Some of the world’s greatest beers are featured in the Smokestack Series. Boulevard’s Imperial Stout may not have a fancy name, but it sure as hell has a lot to like. The aroma speaks to this beer’s barrel aging and gargantuan malt profile: boozy bourbon and smoky roasted malt. As black as black can be, this stout has a creamy texture and a dry finish. The flavor showcases more graininess than it does chocolate or coffee. This is both a boon and a caveat. On the upside, this flavor makes Boulevard’s Imperial Stout stand apart from other brews. On the downside, it may not satisfy the tastes that many have come to love and expect from this style. In short, the taste will determine whether you love this beer or not. It’s probably pretty clear which camp I belong to.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
A- Chocolate, soy sauce, whiskey, cocoa.
A- Black color, black liquid, brown head.
T- Bitter cocoa, chocolate, coffee, licorice, bourbon.
P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, slightly bitter finish.
O- Having absolutely loved everything I’ve tried in the smokestack series, I was excited for this one. Ultimately, I was a little let down. Just not what I have come to expect from a good Imperial Stout. This isn’t horrible, but it was more bitter than I had hoped for as well as being quite grainy. I think I would prefer it all aged instead of blended with fresh ale. This just wasn’t a beer that left me in awe.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
P: Pours a dark brown almost pitch black with mahogany highlights. Capped with a dense full inch of espresso head and micro bubble lacing that looks like fish egg roe lining the glass.
S: First whiff is straight nail polish. Whisky is prominent. Chocolate syrup, rye, cinnamon, molasses, wheat and barley fresh from the field.
T/M: Chocolate whisky filled candies, molasses, lots of grains, pumpernickel bread, spicy rye, maraschino cherries with a cinnamon sting. Flaked oats create a thick creamy body while carbonation and spice dance on the tongue. Finishes chalky with lingering earth notes and booze. I keep getting faint grape essence.
O: A nice blend of sweet, booze and spice. The whiskey is the star but doesn’t ruin the delicacy of the stout. Another hit from the Smokestack Series. Serving style: bottle

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours pitch black, with a dense, tall tan head. Aroma is dark, rich chocolate, some fruity esters, light bourbon. Caramel, Creme brûlée, earthy espresso, dried fruit, light bourbon, vanilla oakyness, dusty dark cocoa, fudge-y brownie, burnt sugar, roasted nuts. Creamy, silky mouthfeel. You can tell the base beer was fantastic but the light barrel influence brings this one to another level. Phenomenal.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
A perfect imperial stout. Thick, luscious, malty, and surprisingly drinkable. The barrel aged blend brings out the smoky and smooth character of the malts.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ml. Caged and corked bottle. Pours a thick, tiny bubbled, well retained, beige head, with some lacing, over a clear brownish black (SRM 35) body....nose is chocolate, coffee, whiskey, dried fruits including raisin, cherry, hints of smoke.....taste is moderately sweet, with toffee/caramel tones, chocolate, coffee, light wood, wisps of whiskey, vanilla, hints of smoke, with light burnt tones, moderate bitterness on the finish.....mouth feel thick, chewy, sticky, alcohol warmth present, carbonation low, with a soft finish. This is a well done nicely balanced Imperial Stout. The complex malt bill made for remarkable complexity, with just enough from the hops to balance back. The whiskey barrels added additional tones without being dominant. This is a winter beer with great nourishment. BJCP 10/3/17/5/8

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a luscious opaque sable with a fairly thick and fluffy dirty tan head that sticks around for a little bit. Aroma has nice notes of quality coffee, roast malt, chocolate, a snippet of whisky-soaked wood, and even a touch of hops. Flavor is bold as a watchdog, rolling chocolate, caramel, coffee and whisky notes plus a whisper of woody hops. Texture is fir m and smooth, it not overly fizzy. Fit for a Czar, or a Czarina.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Shared at a bomber tasting. coppery brown head, short duration, dark brown color, clear. Aroma: roast, raisins, light berry scent. Palate: full body, average carbonation, oily. Taste: sweet, to tartly fruity sweet. Overall, somewhat unimpressed. The taste did not hold up to what the aroma put off. Still very good.

Draft. Interesting stout. Lots of spice character, lots of dark fruitiness, rich and chocolatey, very little roast.
