COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like India Pale Ale, Imperial Stouts were originally brewed with high percentages of malt and hops to help them withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, wheat, rye, and oats. A portion of the batch has been aged in whiskey barrels, then blended with fresh ale before bottling. Za Vas!

Deep brown pour with tan head. Aroma is dark fruit, prunes, toast. Flavor has notes of mildly bitter chocolate, dark fruit, and toffee.

Black with a big brown head. Aroma of roast, cherry, chocolate, vanilla, and whiskey barrel. Taste is rich, sweet, and roasty with a nice bit of the barrel. Booze taste is minimal. Full bodied, but relatively not that thick, smooth, slightly tingly. Average for a good imperial stout; Quite good but not ultimately a standout for the style.

This one is too sweet for me. Tap @ Pour. Deep brown with mocha head. Smells like molasses & perfume. Very sweet, almost cloying.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Black, rich beige head. Licorice, coffee and vanilla up front. Mid sweet with medium-full body and rounded mouthfeel. Elegant, somewhat spritzy with peppery vanilla and coffee flavour, backed by caramel and licorice. Mildly warming finish.

750 ml bottle. Pours a nearly pitch black color with a large light brown head. A big ash, smoke, woody nose. The flavor is awesome: intense dark malty base, roast, cherries, dark fruit, vanilla and whiskey. Really intense, licorice and smoke. Metallic at times. Lovely big stout.

Bottle shared with koleminer20. 2013 vintage. Aroma is sweet, vanilla, licorice, chocolate, malty, a little fruit. Appearance is black, brown head. Taste is bitter, dark chocolate, malt, metallic. Mouthfeel is ok, decent carbonation, oily but not so heavy. Overall...it’s not as impressive as expected.

750 mL corked and caged bottle. 2013 vintage. Shared with ebone1988. The pour is a good medium black color with a large khaki colored head and lots of soapy lace clinging to the glass. The aroma is beautiful. There is a nice vanilla character that meets the nose. There is a strong oak to accompany a light licorice and some great roast. Dark fruit starts to come through on the back end. The flavor is a lot of roasted malt, some medium dark chocolate and then it turns a bit metallic on the finish. The mouth feel is good and creamy, but not as thick as I was expecting. The aftertaste is lingeringly roasty and chocolatey. Could be so much better. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2013 bottle, drank March of 2015. Given that 40% was aged in bourbon barrels for a year and the rest is a year old at least it was quite bitter. Mostly whiskey and dark chocolate on the nose. The taste is mostly bourbon but it’s quite abrasive. Overall not the best bourbon barrel stout I’ve had but not terrible. Maybe letting it age and sweeten up a bit would improve it

Bottle: 2013 - very dense deep brown to black. Light head and lace. Very inky dense roasted nose. Coffee, smokey, dark chocolate but with a high tone edge. Hint of florals and maybe some VA. Dry to off dry palate with maybe a slightly fresh or sour edge and low bitterness. The Flavors a re great. Very rich, saturated, creamy palate. Long and balanced. Dark chocolate, dried fruit, ink, wonderful palate. Very complexed beer. Saturated and almost funky.

75cl Bottle, tfs Julien! Black colour, huge beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate, black liquorice, some roast, hint of coffee. Flavour is sweet, milk chocolate, liquorice, lot of it, light fruity, some oak/vanilla, light-bitter finish. Medium bodied. Expected a lot more complexity.
