Like India Pale Ale, Imperial Stouts were originally brewed with high percentages of malt and hops to help them withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, wheat, rye, and oats. A portion of the batch has been aged in whiskey barrels, then blended with fresh ale before bottling. Za Vas!

Great looking beer - thick and dark with a durable golden-tan head. Nose is chocolate with an anise overtone. Surprisingly understated nose. Velvety mouthfeel, with an assertive bitter taste. Really well-rounded stout. Slight whiskey hints from the barrel aging. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2014 fresh bottle. Sweet, sticky, whiskey-forward chocolate syrup nutty amaretto stout. Fruity-boozy. Phosphorus and ink. Full bodied, low carbonation, sugary cola fruit stewed plum flavoring, strongly bitter finish. (3.3)

Rating from 2009: Dense black pour with a dark cocoa-colored head. Soft yeast-centered nose is full of doughy and lactic esters, milk chocolate and soft bitter cocoa waft out of the glass. Dense texture and soft natural carbonation form a lovely play of semi-bitter chocolate, mild roast, slightly peppery Belgian yeast notes and a small nip of alcohol, well-hidden and appreciated in context. Wonderfully frothy, silky and smooth, the malt is well-textured and properly full and smooth. I tend not to like Belgian stouts or Belgian-inspired stouts, the yeast strains typically produce too much of a lactic character that I don’t think work well with the roast and chocolate typically found in good stout. This is a wonderfully nice beer that I’ll have a chance to sample again a few times. (4.1)

2013 release drank 11/29/14. Appearance is jet black with a tan foam cap that dissipates quickly. Aroma is dark fruit, bourbon, vanilla, roast, and alcohol. Taste is rich caramel and chocolate, with bourbon, vanilla, licorice, and roast on the back end. Mouthfeel is medium with a light carbonation and moderate alcohol warmth. Finishes well balanced with some lingering notes of bourbon and alcohol. Good imperial stout...roast is restrained with a prominent bourbon and alcohol flavor and finish

Bottle (750ml $14): Black with big tan head. Aroma of chocolate and bourbon. Taste the same. The bourbon is actually more subtle than most of this style. Very nice.

750 ml bottle. 2013 vintage. Pours black with a full tan/yellow head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of burnt toast, heavily roasted malts and espresso. Flavors of oily coffee and black chocolate with a little sharpness (rye?) and faint watery smoky alcohol notes. Long acidic coffee finish and good carbonation. Interesting.
