The Nommo are ancestral spirits worshipped by the Dogon tribe of the West African nation of Mali. The name is derived from a Dogon word meaning ‘to make one drink.’ No, really. Nommo, usually described as amphibious, hermaphroditic, fish-like creatures, were created by the sky god Amma, who caused them to multiply by splitting them into doubled sets of twins. Seeing a trend here? Maybe it’s farfetched, but we think the story of the Nommo makes this whole enterprise a little more fun and interesting.

Our Nommo has a brilliant deep amber color and a sweet caramel malt profile. This beer showcases the coriander, cinnamon, and star anise used in the kettle, complementing them with clove and banana notes contributed by the Belgian yeast. The rich complexity of Nommo’s flavor makes it a worthy partner to a variety of meats and game, as well as aged or aromatic cheeses.

Draft at Jerry’s. Clear brown with decent, creamy, beige head / Nose of banana, chocolate, cinnamon, and other baking spice / Medium body, creamy, a touch thin with low carbonation, sweet but with good balance and lightly bitter finish / Flavors of banana, semisweet chocolate, cinnamon, clove, star anise / Nicely done, but has a dessert in a glass character which would make it difficult to have more than just one.

Aroma of dark pitted fruit and spices. Pours a deep amber with garnet highlights with a mostly diminishing tan head and no lacing. The taste is slightly sweet. Bananas, cloves, dark fruit, and cinnamon notes. Medium- light body with moderate carbonation. Light mouthfeel. Overall, enjoyable but on the light side for a Belgian Dubbel.

It poured a reddish/brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was of raisin, toffee and plums. The taste was of bread, nutty and fruity. An overall good beer.

Lightly hazy dark amber - fizzy carbonation/lace - nose is fairly sweet, with notes of raisin, toffee, dark bread, light cinnamon and faint clove - rather high in abv for the style - the thin/watery body and texture just make it all the more apparent just how strong it is, too, letting the alcohol come through too much - flavors of overripe dark fruits, light melanoidin character, clean but high sweetness - dries out slightly through the middle as mild earthy phenols and strong spiciness come to the fore - finish is moderately spicy, with a lot of lingering alcohol heat - not exactly unenjoyable, but kind of messy.

Beer 34 Asheville trip, Thirsty Monk. Medium amber, slight head. Sugar and caramel malt aroma. Toffee malt flavor, lots of fruit, raisiny, bready. Spicing did not come through, but perhaps attributed to a dry finish. Nicely done.

Pours a clean ruby copper with two fingers of creamy ’flan yellow’ head. Nose is lightly grainy with a touch of acidity and that ’rusty’ dubbel character. Hint of metal and fruit skins. Medium light body with notes of iron/raw meat in the flavor with a light grainy quality and touch of sweetness. Interesting
