COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Massive hazy chestnut ale with overwhelming rye whiskey aroma. Peppery, spicy, heady aromas with underlying bread, caramel, vanilla, fennel, raw grain and chocolatey even notes. Fairly complex, but also very warm. Quite the bruiser and managing that without being too sticky, thanks to the spicy and gently tannic afterthoughts that keep the sugariness at a check. Still, you can’t help but reckon it is a purely digestive brew, do not expect any drinkability and expect a good buzz if you drink a whole 750 by yourself, like I’m doing now. One to share, undoubtedly and in that context, it is definitely working well, competently brewed and interestingly integrated, focusing on rye, but not on slaughtering your tongue nor ridiculously chewiness. Not my type of beer, if you had not guessed, but worthy of its props and significantly different from your average bourbon aged BW.

Aroma of caramel and wood. The taste is ower powered by the bourbon. Warming alcohol, I will age my other bottle for a couple of years.

Doft av vanilj och umami. Smaken börjat med mandellikör men tydlig vanilj och råg. Hade nog passat bra till skaldjur. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"This was one that took a few minutes, but really opened up nicely, leaving us all wanting more by the end. Delicious and aromatic blend of spicy and sweet rye malts, slight (but unique) hop presence, floral, vanilla and whiskey overtones. ABV shows, but it’s not hot, and practically begs for another sip. Not what I expected, but really complex, and realy good."

Strong alcohol smell with small hints of sweet fruits. Tastes of caramel, dark fruit, alcohol and oak barrels. The aftertaste has a good bitterness that fills the upper part of the mouth for a long time. Too much alcohol in both aroma and flavor for me to like it. Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Vintage 2014. Muddy copper with a moderate, foamy tan head. Aroma is spicy rye, booze, vanilla notes, soft toasted coconut, caramel and sweet malt. Taste is spicy rye notes, dark bread, sweet malt, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla notes, toasted coconut, booze and candied dark fruit. Body is medium with a soft, bubbly carbonation and light warmth. Ends with more spicy rye, toasted bread, sweet malt, toasted grains, caramel, brown sugar notes, vanilla, and hints of toasted coconut. Nice!

Flaska från systembolaget. Gyllenbrun grumlig vätska. Doft av smörkola och hö. Smak som tydligt drar åt bourbon med sin söta knäckiga karaktär. Smått spritig.

750ml brown corked and caged 2014 years vintage bottle, poured into a Tulip glass. Appearance is opaque bronze colored with a medium sized beige head, that when reduced left a little lacing on the glass. Aroma of whiskey, oak wood notes, toffee and vanilla. Flavours of whiskey, oak wood notes, toffee, caramel, rye bread and spices. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter. Palate is full bodied, slightly syrupy texture and average carbonation. Overall a grand beer, well balanced and with a pleasant combination of flavours. Strong both in ABV and taste, a beer for people that like Rye.
