Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Pours a dark mahogany brown with fluffy head. Aromas of bourbon, malts, citrus hops. Flavors of light malt, booze and some sweetness

750ml corked and caged bottle from the 2013 release (Courtesy of Headbanger). I poured it into a Snifter at 43°. Color is a burnt orange with good carbonation and a small off white head. There are just a couple of floaties hanging about in the first pour. Aroma is whiskey, oak and a slight sweetness. It has a medium body with a very smooth mouth feel. Flavor is surprisingly light coming in with some malt and rye, then the whiskey shows along with oak and vanilla. After taste is clean giving a mild bitterness as the oak lingers and a hint of the alcohol shows. Overall I love it, light yet very complex and easy to drink, maybe a little too easy for a brew with 12% ABV.

Poured from bottle. Nice thick head. A dark Amber color. Strong hints of alcohol. 12% and a large bottle so this is what I need for today. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Paradiso. Tawny brown with mocha head. Aroma is rye toast and brown sugar. Full bodied, nice notes from the whisky and the barrel, layered flavors, smooth boozy finish. Yum.

Spicy rye boozy aroma with plenty of vanilla and bourbon barrel. Nice looking light brown color with a thin cap of cream colored foam. Very drinkable yet spicy with a tinge of booze and sweetness to balance. Good palate, overall good not great. I've had better boulevard smokestack offerings. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cloudy deep amber. Nice looking head. Creamy mouthfeel. Velvety. Vanilla on the nose. Great beer, but I’m not a fan of sweet beers. Reminiscent of a belgian style ale. The rye is there, but the sweetness takes from the spice.

Pours a clear dark red-amber with white head. A very strong rye grain alcohol, malt, and fruit aroma. A strong taste of dark alcohol, dark fruits, malts, and caramel. A strong alcoholic lingering flavor with dark fruits.

Exceptionally balanced and drinkable at 12%. A little sweet with bright bitterness and rye spice. Full mouthfeel rounded out with dried fruit, reminiscent of a Belgian strong. Hints of vanilla and booze. The fruit, booze, and vanilla make me think red sangria. Cloudy deep red color. Not a lot of aroma, but it deserves a high score. Brilliant concept and execution. Pair with fatty red meat and spice.
