Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Bottle, 75cl corked. A small, dense, light beige head forms over an unclear dark amber colored beer. There’s lots of bourbon on the nose, with dried fruits, toffee and alcohol, some dark chocolate. Coconut and vanilla. Dark chocolate, roasted malts and toffee and some woody hints in the flavor. Full body and a soft carbonation. Long finish with a good bourbon impact. Still, a bit on the bourbon side for me. Well, nice anyway. 151110

Pours hazy amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, vanilla, oak, alcohol, rye and dried fruits. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long warm, rye, vanilla, oak, caramel and fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Tap pour at Butcher and the Boar with commonshawn. Starts with plenty of head but quickly dissipates. Beautiful color...near mahogany that exudes the richness to come. Aroma brings in alcohol, peat, and sugars. Taste is really solid. Elements of rye bread mealiness. Whiskey booziness. Sugar Belgianiness. Full of flavors. Dark fruits come to mind. Toffee and caramel in some degree. It’s a big boy beer but definitely worth sampling. Only drawback, and it’s minor, is a slight funk aftertaste like you just ate a rye sandwich. It doesn’t deter from the wholehearted recommendation.

Tap at Butcher and the boar with commonmac. 12oz tulip. Hazy red with medium white head and good lacing. Smells of sugar, alcohol, and yeast, peat. Powerful nose . So smooth. Sugary bubble gum, clean bourbon rye bread, then lingering alcohol burn. This beer is full octane , but somehow delivered in a soft and creamy way. Warming and you feel yourself getting tipsy while drinking it. Great on great. Awesome.

750ml bottle, from Dutch’s. 2015 release, best by 07-2017. Great vanilla, toasted oak up front. Hazy orange red color. Particles visible in later pours. Pours with a thin off-white head (audibly fizzing initially), that leaves a ring, and an island of head on the surface. Some loose bits of lace. Good rye malt toasty-spiciness. Not as super-sweet as I feared... Moderate to bigger sweet, but has a more dry finish, with some alcohol warmth. Very mild bite, and a moderate to bigger bitter taste underneath all that. Bigger body. Kind of a slightly more effervescent and soft, but lighter carbonation. Very long, nice spicy rye, caramel, and vanilla rye-whiskey finish. Maybe a touch blunt, but tasty stuff. Even better when I throw a sandwich into the mix.

Pretty nice stuff. Decently large barrel presence here but doesn’t come off badly necessarily. Pours dark amber with OK head. Consistency thick and slightly syrupy. A good beer but not something I’d drink a lot. Sweety finish with some booze. Tap at Churchkey.
