Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Ryeís body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Amber color with a thick off white head. Aroma is boozy, vanilla and oak with strong bourbon. Flavor is also boozy, strong hints of bourbon. Vanilla and oak with a touch of hops to cut threw just a little. A bit sweet, but finishes fairly mild. Wife: 3.7

Alcohol in the front, alcohol in the middle, alcohol at the end and beyond. This is the hottest beer Iíve ever tasted and quite the disappointment. Behind the alcohol was some wood and whiskey, an indeterminate spiciness that was simply overwhelmed by the alcohol. Maybe the flavors were balanced, I could not tell. Part of the magic of great barleywines or strong ales is blending the alcohol in with all of the other goodness. I simply could not get past it here. Would I drink again? Maybe just to see if the first bottle was off. Otherwise, no.

Type: 12-oz. bottle Glass: Modern Times pint glass From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif. Price: $14.99 (received as a Fatherís Day gift) Purchased: June 14, 2014 Consumed: June 20, 2014 Misc.: Champagne cork; Batch No. RR13324; Best by Nov. 2015; 2014 edition Poured a dark caramel, amber, murky color with 3-to-4 fingers of khaki-tan rocky head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Good foamy layered lacing along the sides of the glass. Good, thick retention on the top all the way down. Smelled Jim Beam, whiskey, light bourbon, oak, vanilla, wood, caramel, light coke (or maybe that is what I was wishing), honey, Tang and slight urine. Very boozy. Tasted pretty close to smell, but slightly better. Got Jim Beam still, whiskey, bourbon, oak, wood, unknown hops, dark fruits, vanilla, light caramel and toffee. Still pretty boozy. I know whiskey is often (always?) associated with rye, but Iím not getting what I usually get from a rye beer. Iím missing that iced tea and tea note that I usually get. Maybe Iíve always been wrong about what rye tastes like. Grew on me as it went down. Medium body. Creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Long, boozy finish. I really liked this beer, but didnít love it. My ratings could have gone a few different ways, but it was definitely tasty. Booziness rules the day.

750 ml. bottle. It pours a deep red color with a fizzy, khaki colored head. The aroma has some hard fruit candy, alcohol, vanilla and touches of barrel. Theres some plum, golden raisins and unripe banana in there as well. The flavor is fruity with some hard candy, light baking spice and vanilla tinged alcohol in the finish. Lots of whiskey, vanilla, unripe banana, cane sugar, and plum. Pretty decent as a sipper, but a bit overbearing.

Bottle from the deepest reaches of my nearly exhausted cellar. Murky rust colored pour with a light tan head. Clean whiskey with slight rye spice and some background sweet malt in the aroma. Taste is whiskey dominated but itís balanced with some sweet malt and thin bitterness. Lightly coating mouthfeel. Good beer.

750 mL bottle courtesy of Chris, served in a stem glass at a tasting at Danís. Pours hazy toffee with medium off white head that remains and leaves a medium amount of fine lace. The nose has notes of rye, caramel, oak, vanilla, subtle grass and earth. The flavour is fairly sweet with caramel, chocolate, rye barrel and oak, along with grass, subtle hops and vanilla. The finish is long and malty with big vanilla notes. On the palate it is medium-full in body with a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, a very nice rye barrel-aged rye ale. Light and delicate, fairly complex. 2014-06-07

Pours a cloudy, dark caramel with some sediment. Thin, off white head. Aroma has notes of caramel, barrel notes, and slightly spicy. Sweeter. Taste is on the sweeter side. Caramel with spicy rye, and a dry finish. Medium-full body and carbonation. Slightly syrupy texture with an effervescent carbonation. Overall an awesome beer. Spicy rye with caramel.

Mahogany red color with an off white tanish head. Aromas are slight oak, coconut and vanilla. Big rye spice with maybe the slightest bit of citrus. Malty sweetness as well. Mild carbonation. Barrel characteristics up front quickly lead to heavy, assertive spicy rye. Finishes smooth with a slight citrus bitterness mixed with a rye spice. Some caramel malt mixed into the middle/finish. Some heat in the finish, or is it spice? Medium bodied. Decent beer.
