Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Ryeís body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

On tap @ Uber. Pours cloudy pale golden with thin head. Aroma is boozy sweet malt, notes of spice and raisin. Taste is sweet syrupy malt, smooth body, rye barrel notes on the finish. Most rye beers have heavy bitterness, which this doesnít. It may just be hidden by the abv though. Thick, big beer. I canít get much nuance out of this though.

On draft at rustico in arlington. Pours a medium amber with an off white head. Caramel and toffee notes in the nose. Sweet raisins, toffee and vanilla. Bitter finish.

On tap at The Columbia Ale House. Pours a deep amber with small off-white head. Smalls of roasted malts caramel toffee with rye whiskey notes. Tastes of amazing dark fruits covered in caramel. Boozy whiskey lingers but does not kill the pallet or over power the malt backbone. Amazing beet would would to taste the evolution of flavor in 4 or 5 years.

Pours a hazy auburn with big head and decent lacing. Get spicy and boozy aromas on nose with dark fruit and vanilla and oak from barrel coming through. Sweet taste of caramel malt with spiciness either from rye or alcohol, which is apparent but surprisingly subdued for 12%. Can taste some oak and vanilla from barrel. All flavors blend nicely, finishly a little sticky but not cloying. Moderate mouthfeel with medium carbonation and full taste. Really good for a high alcohol beer. Beautiful combination of flavors. One of my favorite barrel aged beers so far. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: The aroma consists of heavy caramel, mild toffee, citrus, and faint rye. It pours a transparent amber with a small off-white head. The flavor starts with moderate caramel and toffee. The has candy corn, rye, citrus, and faint vanilla. Itís medium bodied with soft carbonation and mouthfeel.

Apple cider color with creamy, beige head / Nose of cider, rye spice, and whiskey barrel / Medium body, good balance, mostly dry with lightly bitter, somewhat hot, finish / Mild flavors of apple cider, caramel, cinnamon, rye spice, and whiskey barrel / Very dry, without a lot of fruit, but then thatís rye for you. (Would like to try again in a quieter setting.)

750 ml corked and caged bottle, 2012 bottle, one year old. Pours murky orangeish-brown with a medium beige lacy head with decent retention. Aroma is pretty exotic; it smells spicy (I guess thatís the rye), clove, caramel. Taste is sweet and savory and ends on a sour note. Whiskey comes through fairly strong, as well as the oak. Leaves an alcohol burn in the back of the throat. Spicy. Bubbly mouthfeel. Tasty. Iím lucky I got the last bottle at Enoteca!

Bottle via trade. Poured muddy brown body under a large foamy light beige head that has some nice retention on the edges. Aroma has slight rye seeds, whiskey that almost has a bourbon quality about it, toast and wood. Average to slightly thinner body with strong carbonation, noticable heat and lingering carbonation. Flavor of whiskey, vanilla, dry wood and some saw dust. Good but I was expecting more.

Oh yeah, thatís good stuff. Gorgeous pour, tawny, red gold in the glass with a substantial lingering head. Smoky, assertive rye ale with a slight boozy rye whiskey presence on the palate. Read the product deScription, read the reviews, this is a canít miss brew.

750---->Boulevard stemmed glass. Pours a light copper with a frothy two finger head that fades quickly leaving moderate lace. Aroma is bourbon and vanilla. Tastes of heavy bourbon, spicy rye, and sweet grapes. Nice lively palate with plenty carbonation. Not a bad beer, just a little too heavy on the whiskey front for my likings.
