Bomber. Pours brown with thin head. Aroma is wood (oak), caramel, brown sugar, spices, and whiskey. Flavor is the same. Outstanding.

Copper with good clarity, fizzy off white head, dissipates quickly. Nose- strong rye liquor nose with molasses. Taste- quite spicy, caramel, slight vanilla, boozy, toasty wood. Body is on the thinner side with drying hot finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Had on tap at Wild Monk in LaGrange. 2012 vintage. Served in snifter.
A: Pours a deep amber body, slightly hazy, with some plum like hues running through middle. A thin, light tan head forms on the pour and subsides to a thin collar and film. Some soapy splotches of lace of left down the glass.
S: Rye spiciness is with the whiskey coming through is prevelant up front and through each smell. As it warms more of the dark, bready malts and the barrel sweetness start to come through.
T: The barrel really takes over the taste here. Big rye whiskey flavors, some light oak and vanilla. Dark rye bread malts with a touch of some mild hops on the finish mixing with some alcohol. As the beer warmed the malt bill opened up and some caramel sweetness showed itself as well.
M: Medium bodied with some slight warming in the throat. Medium carbonation. The barrel presence really has a lingering effect on the palate.
O: As the beer warmed it got progressively sweeter and more complex. This does need some time to mellow out as the barrel is really taking over the base beer and you lose out one some of the fine qualities of the rye beer itself. Overall though, this was a nice beer and I will give the one I have in the cellar a solid year to see how it develops.

750ml bottle - think this was part of Summer Secret Santa. Hazy mahogany with a finger of dark biege head. Dough, whisky, oak, raisin, vanilla, bit of barley. High carbonation, moderate body, lots of vanilla sweetness in this one mixed with alcohol and fruit.

UPDATED: JAN 23, 2014 Drinking this about 6 months after release. I really remember enjoying it a lot more closer to release. One major positive is that the beer is smooth, no way I would ever guess this was 11%. The barrel character is very nice, but the flavor profile lacks much of anything else. The rye is not strong. I think I made a mistake by cellaring this beer.
Re-rating a fresh 2014 bottle. Deep amber with 2 finger foamy white head. Aroma has tons of rye whiskey barrels, nice and sweet with some toffee. Flavor opens with some sweetness, finishes with some harsh whiskey. Not bad, but not amazing.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Sampled at Brad Fest 2012 in Minneapolis, MN. Pours a hazy brown color with white head. Rye, grain, bourbon aroma. Rye whiskey flavor. Good, but doesn’t measure up to some of the other Smokestacks.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a soft coppery red orange beer with one finger of sandy beige tan head. Nose is super rich and bursting with notes of fresh oak and spicy rye, lots of caramel and rich malt notes. Super rich flavor, oak is almost overwhelming. Tons of vanillin and spicy oak notes. Rich malt sweetness, dextrinous almost. Warming finish and full body with a low carbonation.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, shared with mmmIPA and my in-laws. Cloudy medium amber, light golden head, good retention. Aroma is warm rye, raisins, vanilla. Flavour is very rye-centric also, warm sweet rye, vanilla, raisins, light spice, wood. Warm finish, light bitterness. Very delicious, balanced to avoid harsh booziness or cloying sweetness. Loved it! My father-in-law thought it was the best beer he ever had! And he’s had a lot of beers with me.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours a ruddy reddish brown color with a 3 finger head. Tastes of whiskey, scotch, wood abound. Nice burn from the alcohol but yet balanced.
Definitely one of my top 5 "big beers"! Buy this one if you can.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
750ml bottle thanks to unclemike: pours a clear deep copper bronze with a clingy-lacing froth of off-white head. Has a sweet light caramel and rye nose with lots of complex whiskey oak. Body starts with good fullness and sweet caramel maltiness with plenty of buttery oak and whiskey notes before a drier slightly warming finish. Has good complexity but too much buttery flavor for my tastes.
