Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Bottle. Pours hazy amber with a small off white head leaving some lacing. Aroma is sweet malty rye fruity. Flavor is balanced with a nice touch of rye, medium hoppyness, a bit pungent some fruityness. Finishes pungent dry malty.

Bottle. Cherry, rye malt and rye whisky aroma. Hazy golden yellow with large head. Sweet rye whisky, light caramel malt, and mildly bitter alcohol flavor. Too much whisky and not enough beer.

From the March 2013 3R6P tasting - and the best beer of the night IMHO +++ Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured an orange-brown color with a medium sized foamy orange-tan head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was malty and semi-sweet with notes of orange and toffee. The flavor was dryish with moderate notes of honey, bourbon, toffee and coconut. Medium length honey, toffee and coconut finish. Medium body. Well done.

Sample from the bottle thanks to Briton at CBC. Reddish metal stained amber with a thin sudsy white head. Nose is woody, light cedar, lots of rye, light whiskey, toasted grains. Flavor is similar, wood and rye, with notes of sweet pipe tobacco, rustic leather, and light whiskey-like heat. Interesting but doesn’t stand out enough to make me wanna buy a bottle of my own.*

Sample from Carlson at the Brick Store Pub. Brown color, with a medium, beige head. The aroma is immense vanilla, toffee, oak, molasses, and caramel. The flavor is overwhelmingly sweet. The palate is very heavy, syrupy, and sticky. Overall, this is a wonderfully complex and very flavorful beer.

Pour’s golden orange with two fingers of off white head and great lacing. Sweet bourbon whiskey aromas. Taste boozy and sweet vanilla oak lingering aftertaste. Overall this is a very good barrel aged beer with med body and very nice carbonation and mouthfeel.
