COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

750ml bottle thanks to unclemike: pours a clear deep copper bronze with a clingy-lacing froth of off-white head. Has a sweet light caramel and rye nose with lots of complex whiskey oak. Body starts with good fullness and sweet caramel maltiness with plenty of buttery oak and whiskey notes before a drier slightly warming finish. Has good complexity but too much buttery flavor for my tastes.

pours a semi-clear maroon with a very large beige head, and great lacing. smell is of rye, sweet malt, caramel, and some whiskey. taste is thick and oily, malt, whiskey, and rye. ends strong and a little dry.

Pours a deep ruby red color, hazy, with a lasting kaki head. Aroma of caramel, sweet bread, spicy ryet, and alcohol. Full bodied, chewy, warming alcohol on the tongue use and some burn down the throat. Very sweet and malty, some bitterness to balance, but the alcohol cuts the sweetness most. Rich and boozy. Not an everyday drink, but worth the slow sip.

Robuste en bouche, mais jamais l’alcool ne prend trop de place. Caramel, miel, dattes dans une marre boisée et épicée. Plus on s’avance dans la dégustation, plus l’équilibre impressionne.

750 ml. Hazy light amber with orange highlights. Off-white head. Aroma of rye whiskey and toasted grain. Hints of caramel, vanilla and wood. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Plenty of alcohol in the finish. Medium to full body, velvety texture, moderate carbonation. Rye whiskey is the dominant taste and, along with the alcohol, mutes the wood, caramel and vanilla flavors. Pleasant enough and as a whiskey sipper, this works fine, but it’s bit too much rye (whiskey) on the rye for me.

(750 ml (bottle 4367 (2012)) from Grain and Vine) Dark amber-brown body with a tall khaki-tan head. Aroma of rye grain and dark caramel. Mouthfeel full, slightly dry. Flavor of deep barrel aged whisky and wood with rye and caramel. Not boozy or hot but really big.

Bottle shared at Ale Alpharetta. You know at tasting when there are a whole bunch of pingers left after a bit, well this one was like a gravitational pull to me. Quite unique and addictive. Pours a ruby/brown with lasting off-white head. Aroma is oak, rich toffee, vanilla, some rye spiciness, bourbon. Taste is oaky, vanilla, rich toffee, some bourbon booziness, spicy sweet. Nice!

Bottle shared by Chaney. Thanks Brandon! A: Amber hue with a decent sized head that leaves generous lacing. S: Brandy, alcohol, malt, rye. T: Rye malt, alcohol. The beer is really good, but definitely a sipper. It’s very strong and full of flavor. It drinks like a fine liqueur. M: Alcohol very present with a medium body. D: A few ounces is plenty. UPDATED: DEC 16, 2012 I love rye in beers, but there is such a thing as too much. Thankfully, I haven’t discovered it in beer yet. Rich, bready flavor. Some spice, bourbon, vanilla, and dark fruit. Tried at the Cunigan’s tasting party in 2012. Tried the 2013 at the Christmas beer tasting in Dec. 2012.
