Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Ryeís body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Corked bottle from QFC, Capitol Hill, Seattle; vintage 2014
Hazy amber color with compact head. Intense aroma from the barrel, Bourbon like; but then it gets replaced by some soap feeling, vegetables, tomatoes. Smooth mouthfeel, full bodied; straws and malt flavor, some barrel, light peppery/spicy touch, some vegetables, high alcohol perception.
At first it has a great nose, but then it goes downhill. Itís chaotic, and excessive.

Pours brownish with a thick light tan head. Aroma is oak barrel and tobacco. Taste is smooth, light syrup and creamy mellow malts. Flavors are hard to pinpoint. Itís nice, but I was expecting more.

On draft. Interesting... Aroma of a youngish Scotch. The sweet flavors you might expect from a richly ryed beer are evidently mellowed out by the rye-barrel aging, I suppose? Kind of a surprisingly mellow beer, especially considering the ABV. Will be interested to try the 2014 version later this summer.

Bottle, caged and corked. OK, so right up front, if you donít like whiskey, you wonít like this. From the original aroma right into the very, viscous, alcohol-laden burn in the drink, this is all about the barrel-aged component. This is dark, cherry-oak colored and thick. Settle in, maybe smoke a cigar. (#5502, 4/29/2014)

Clear, red gold with a thin tan head. Nose is heavy vanilla and caramel sweetness, maybe a touch of mango. Bitter, with some sourness, also some umami. Muted sweetness towards the end. Incredibly upfront alcohol, medium body. Some carbonation. Really excellent. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: APR 12, 2014 Bottle. Pours dark cherry brown, no head. Aroma is rye spice and barrel. Taste adds caramel, warm alcohol and more barrel - very sweet. Great balance in the mouthfeel between malt and spice flavor, definitely boozy- a little slippery but not bad - very low carb. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
