Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Ryeís body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Bottle share up at Proof! Deep amber pour with a frothy white head. Aroma of caramel malt, vanilla, oak, whiskey barrels with some snappy spice. Dominating sweet flavor with whiskey, caramel malt, spice and vanilla. Big sweet body and alcohol. Not bad.

Pours light brown with a quickly diminishing beige head. Some malt, canít really get any of the barrel characteristics in the aroma, but it still smells fantastic. Taste of spice, whiskey, and wood. Absolutely delicious. A little boozy but not by a lot. Standard "4" palate rating. I give these palates a four because they complement the beer style yet donít overshadow. Good beer. Never had a rye ale before, so once again not familiar with the style, but Iím on a big barrel aged kick, and this is a really good one.

I have had this beer a good deal of times since it came out. I had never rated it before but I am trying to climb up the top Blvd raters list nowadays (this will put my in the top 5, woooo! Screw you Pete!). its a good thing because I think that the 2014 version is the best I have had so far. This was on tap at Merchantís in Lawrence, KS. Served in a snifter. Color is dark amber, thick looking with good clarity. generally, its strong (malt, alcohol) but not overly sweet and only a moderate barrel character. So, for a barrel aged 12% barleywine its well done. Alcohol is present. Flavor very well attenated and no boozy but the alcohol is definitely there.

Corked and caged 750 mL. Cloudy brown with floating particles, fine carbonation and a khaki head. Aroma is peaches, whiskey, oak in the background, rye and alcohol. Taste is dry like whiskey. Body is heavier with a sticky feel.

2014 release. Opened 2/9/14. Pours a dark amber. Sort of a battle between barrel qualities and malt notes on the nose. Boozy vanilla, and perfect rye spice across the palate. A bit on the sweet side.

Pours a dark ruby red with a fizzy off white head. Super spicy aroma, lots of rye, a grassy spice, subtle bourbon and vanilla, oak, dark fruits, and caramel. A good bit of plum on the taste, ripe cherry, vanilla and caramel, lots of rye spice, a light amount of citrusy hops, and a little bit of oak. Really tasty, you get a nice amount of spice and not too much bourbon. Canít taste the 12%.

On tap at Ridgewood (Raleigh). Pours a light brown with a touch of head that dissipated quickly. Malty flavor with pleasant rye hints. Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

What could go horribly wrong with this? Oh wait, scratch that question... Iíve seen some the of barrel-aged beers from other brueries that arenít up to par. But this one is a really nice surprise from Boulevard Brewing. The rye barrels shine through in thie great beer. If I could find bottles of this locally then Iíd buy as much of it as possible to horde. Instead of coming home to a glass of scotch or whiskey one could just get a glass of this and be just as happy.

Big thanks to Adam from good old Fargo North Dakota for this. Pours a nice mahogany... Lots of head. This is all about the whiskey. Massive bourbon aromas. There is some malty rye sweetness before the bourbon bombs your palate. Love it... A bit too much bourbon from keeping this in the ranks of the stellar... But still awesome
