Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Pours a light Cola brown, almost red color with a whiskey aroma. Taste is distinctly alcohol with a small cherry aftertaste. A nice beer that doesnt bide the alcohol content well.

Christmas bottle courtesy of Zac. Murky bronze color with a nice tan head. Gentle aroma of sweet caramel and banana. The rye shows up in the flavor with a spicy kick. A little lingering warming booze. Pleasant.

I really want to like this more than I do, maybe as it warms up it will open up. Great sweet scents mixed with hints of malt, alcohol and ale. Really deep amber color with lots of sediment. Has a nice subtle sweet flavor up front, with strong alcohol on the back end. It's a bit cold, so I assume it will open up more as it sits here

A very nice, boozy and interesting strong rye. Pours a beautiful bright cloudy orange-red with a white head. Smells abut fruity, of berries. Taste is creamy and boozy off the bat, with more berries, a bit of vanilla cream and marshmallow, and a good amount of rye spiciness in the finish. Quite good

Draught @ Third Avenue Ale House. Clear copper red with small foamy beige head, spicy rye aroma, low carbonation, strong rye whisky taste, abrupt finish with delicious rye whisky aftertaste. Very satisfying experience.

750 ml. bb July 2017. Pour is clear copper with a spongy disc of foam. Nose is toasted cereal with apple and cream, toasted oak barrel and some spicy hair tonic. Flavor is smoky molasses, orange, peppery bread, dark fruit and resin. Medium-plus body is smooth with medium carbonation, completely disguises the 12 % and has a nice balance.

Pours a dark amber color. Has no lacing due to the high ABV....smells like vanilla and caramel with similar tastes. Finishes warm....shit load of bourbon flavor here. A good beer, but rough on your sobriety.
