COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Pours a murky brown with small lacing. Sweet boozy rue. With caramel. Some tart dark fruit. Malty. Moderate carbonation. Clean mouthfeel. Did I mention boozy? Long malty finish.

Pours a dull reddish-brown from a bottle, espresso crema colored head with some lacing. Aroma is of a spiced whiskey. Flavor starts with caramelized brown sugar, followed by vanilla, slight sour cherry and baked apples, all intertwined with that hearty rye earthiness. Well-balanced yet boozy, feels like a whiskey drink without as strong a hit of alcohol on the back of the throat. Very good beer.

21.05.2015, 0,75l bottle (2014 vintage) @ home:
Nice slightly fizzy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet grainy, caramel malts, oak, dark sugar, alcohol, grass, toffee, nuts, vanilla, almonds. Taste is slightly dry mineraly, oak, alcohol, minerals, caramel malts, weeds, burnt caramel, grain, hints of almond essence. Medium bitterness, mineraly mouthfeel. Fair enough.

Shared 750 ml. 2012 bottle poured to snifters, displaying a hazed, copper color, with a presentable layer of off white/light tan head foam, and ribbons & spots of lacing. The nose was ripe fruit as dark grape & cherry, and maybe a touch of orange rind, with caramel/toffee sweetness, a bit of barrel vanilla, and rye & hop spiciness. Ditto on the taste, with a medium+ body, moderate carbonation, whiskey booziness, and dry finish. Good complexity, and nicely sipable.

2014. Bottle to glass. Pours a chunky light copper amber color with a light tan head. Aroma has a nice barrel character, vanilla, touch of rye. Flavor is boozy, sweet, vanilla, molasses. Medium body with a lingering vanilla molasses sweetness. Not bad at all.

Hazy copper, eggshell ringed head and filmy tent of a head. Nose is brash bourbon, lemon and undercooked merengue with a coppery breadiness. Initial taste of rich, spittle sweet coppery malt and a tap of vanilla sweetness. Grainy grapefruit builds before a hit boozy barrell sweeps into the finish. Soft almost unnoticeable carbonation and surprisingly smooth sipping. Linger is polished, sweet woody and a firm vanilla caramel breadiness. Cheers Paul.

Bottle at Craig’s. Cheers Paul! Pours amber with a thin white head. Aromas of bourbon, but I guess that’s rye whiskey and oak? Citrus, in a cooked orange way. Taste is barley wine syrup territory. Some booze, but relatively balanced finish.

bomber pour..caramel brown color..fairly hazy with active carbonation and particles galore..not overly hazy..aroma is a combination of the boozy whiskey/char/wood.taste is amazingly medium bodied for such a heavy hitter on the abv scale..get that initial spice hit from the rye..quite smooth afterwards..almost creamy mouthfeel with a slightly nutty presence that one may find in certain winter warmers/strong/brown ales..things finish up with a lasting finish that has all the characteristics of the barrel/wood..solid
