Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Ryeís body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

UPDATED: APR 14, 2013 Pours reddish amber with a white foam head that sticks to the glass. The aroma is wine barrel, sangria, coconut, and some tart fruit. The taste is rich caramel, fruit, oak, booze, coconut, and vanilla. Iím really digging this.

From notes. Tasted in early 2013 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle that I purchased at Lush and shared at SvTís house. Pours hazy dark orange with a thick white head that leaves average lace. The nose is malty caramel and maple with spicy and dusty rye. The flavor is more dusty and spicy than the nose with the caramel malt and maple/vanilla barrel taking a bit of a back seat. The body is full with fairly lively carbonation and a long spicy, dusty, and lightly bitter rye finish.

Aroma is stiff and hoppy with a touch of malty sweetness. Taste has dried red fruit notes with some vegetal qualities. Finish is boozy.

Bottle (BBD 11/2015); A nice aroma with lots of caramel and a bit of alcohol. Appearance is clear amber with a beige head. Taste has some whiskey and caramel. The palate has a bit too much alcohol to my taste.

Bottle. Pours clear amber, small off white head, decent lacing. Aroma is vanilla and caramel. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, vanilla and dark sugars, oak tannins, whiskey. Kind of hot, a bit simplistic. Medium body, some acidity.

750ml bottle into a pint glass. A: An aggressive pour yields a tawny colored body with an off-white shaded head thatís a hand high. The head retention is...well, frustrating - it also has a very frothy texture that aids the aforementioned retention. Thick rings of lacing are left behind. The only detractor is some chunky sediment in the body itself. S: Iím getting a really wonderful yet subtle barrel note, loaded with vanilla and mild oakiness. The malts provide some great rye notes - itís spicy much in the way a Belgian ale would be. That, or it actually uses Belgian yeast (not surprising given the brewery) and the rye works beautifully with it. I also pick up a lot of the European hops, which add a wonderful dimension to this beer. There isnít a hint of the 12% anywhere. Aromatically, it really speaks to me - it says "DRINK ME NOW". T: It drinks much like a (good) BSDA would, only with a pleasant rye spiciness on the finish. This really brings the rye malts in a good way, along with some peppery and dark fruit-y yeast esters. Come to think of it, the finish is also pretty vanilla-forward, as well. Also, I get faint grapefruit hints. A light booziness enters the aftertaste, but otherwise, the alcohol is masked admirably. The flavor depth is solid - itís not the most complicated beer ever. Considering the fantastic rye flavors and well hidden alcohol, I donít really care. Itís complex enough. M: Itís not ridiculously full bodied, but it is relatively creamy and restrained in carbonation. Actually, the restrained carbonation makes it a bit syrupy compared to, say, Duvel. Hey, itís 12%. Better to be a bit sweet than a bit boozy as far as Iím concerned. O: Oh yeah, this hits my palate in all the right places. Itís sweet, but not too sweet. Itís spicy, but not too spicy. Itís boozy...no fuck that, itís not boozy at all. Boulevard really worked wonders here - itís so good, I think Iíll kill this 750 solo.

Bomber. Murky amber pour with a cream colored head. Tons of rye whiskey on the nose and taste. Good carbonation. Fairly sweet. Really nice.

Bottle courtesy Aaron. Pours coppery amber brown with 2 finger white head, dissipating to rimming film rather quickly. Nose is all bourbon. Lots, and lots, of bourbon. Like I just opened a keg of bourbon. Flavor not so much. Mild rye notes, lots of bourbon, predominately vanilla along with caramel notes. Pretty delicious.

2010 vintage. Pours a murky reddish-brown. Minimal off-white head, dissipates quickly. Spotty lacing. Aromas of cereal grains, caramel, vanilla, oak and a hint of alcohol. Taste has some sticky sweetness...molasses, caramel, toffee, vanilla...into spice, oak, light bitter hops and a warming barrel character. Nice smooth finish. Nice beer!
