COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Pours a lightly hazy amber with a medium creamy off white head that laced. Aroma of whiskey, vanilla, oak and bread. Flavor of the same. Whiskey Def there but goes well with the rye.

Draft pour at the Burgundian. Pours a dark red color with a fading oily head. Aroma is sweet whiskey, and a tiny bit floral. It’s amazing how much flavor is going on here. Flavor is based on an overly smooth rye whiskey. The barrel flavor comes out extremely well. Heavy carb throughout, though it couldn’t be much smoother. Very dry finish, with a lingering smooth whiskey palate. Really fun beer. Awesome stuff.

Pours a clear copper with a small white head that leaves some lacing. Nose is of bourbon, butter and caramel. Taste is of peppery booze, caramel, coconut and overall not too hot for a 12% brew. Body was medium-full and mouthfeel syrupy. All you get from all that alcohol is a slight burn. Overall a good sipper, now tell me why this doesn’t come in smaller portions?

Bottle (750 ml). 2013 vintage. From Randall, thanks!

Appearance: Hazy copper with a small ring of beige foam and little to no lacing.

Aroma: Strong whiskey presence upfront followed by spices, bread, caramel, boozy notes and light fruitiness.

Taste: A little less whiskey than in the aroma, but it’s still the main features. There’s also spices, toffee, bread, light fruitiness and alcohol.

Palate: Medium to full body (more on the full side). Moderate to medium carbonation. Woodsy. Spicy and warming finish.

Overall: A bit too harsh and boozy for my liking, but I can’t deny it’s a tasty beer. The spiciness isn’t too important and the barrel-treatment probably hide a good part of it. Lack of balance a bit because the whiskey is dominant. Good.

Bottle. Pours light hazy dark maroon, with a big off white head. Aroma is sweet hoppy, with orange peel and apricots, as well as malts with cocoa, prunes, dried fruits and tobacco. Full, creamy body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is hoppy orange peel, as well as sweet malts with muscovado, vanilla and oak barrels.

Dark amber with a small beige head that has very fine bubbles and some pretty nice retention, especially considering the high ABV. The aroma is loaded with vanilla, rye, wood, peppery alcohol, and some deep caramelized sugar. The flavor has some more rye malt, and less vanilla. This beer is very sweet, but seems to lack the richness to match. The somewhat earthy rye flavor comes and goes but the sweetness lingers and hides most of the alcohol. Not as over the top on the rye as I expected, but the sweetness is a but much.

From notes. Tasted in early 2013 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle that I purchased at Lush and shared at SvT’s house. Pours hazy dark orange with a thick white head that leaves average lace. The nose is malty caramel and maple with spicy and dusty rye. The flavor is more dusty and spicy than the nose with the caramel malt and maple/vanilla barrel taking a bit of a back seat. The body is full with fairly lively carbonation and a long spicy, dusty, and lightly bitter rye finish.

Aroma is stiff and hoppy with a touch of malty sweetness. Taste has dried red fruit notes with some vegetal qualities. Finish is boozy.

Bottle (BBD 11/2015); A nice aroma with lots of caramel and a bit of alcohol. Appearance is clear amber with a beige head. Taste has some whiskey and caramel. The palate has a bit too much alcohol to my taste.
