COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Sampled at Gothenburg Beer & Whisky Festival, April 12th. Pours mahogany with a low off-white head. Aroma of caramel, honey, apple, toffee, Taste is caramel, apple, honey, rye bread, raisins. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Aftertaste is caramel with some apple tones.

Bottle. Dark ruby with a thick rocky white head. Aroma is heavy rye barrel and dark fruit. Taste follows suit and adds a buttery and boozy note. Medium creamy mouthfeel with light carbonation. Boozy and tasty.

4 ounce draft at GBD poured into a tasting snifter. Dark caramel brown with off-white head. Aromas of whiskey, dark fruit, maple syrup. Tasting notes of whiskey, dark fruit, citrus. Medium body with a dry finish, syrupy mouthfeel.

Bottle paired with Templeton Rye whiskey. Strong grain mash nose initially with rye bread, dried apricot, and a little whiskey booze, apple pie spice and wood that becomes more apparent when drinking next to actual Templeton Rye whiskey. There’s a lot of rye flavors (bitter and dry) but with the whiskey the subtleties really come out and make it much better.

This one is amazing. The nose is of whiskey. The rye is pretty smooth with hints of vanilla. Reminds me of Canadian whiskey.

From an old rating note (I’m guessing shared up at Proof): dark orange pour. rye and spice in the aroma. tastes are oak, rye bite, prominent whiskey. light bitter. dry fin. interesting, but not my bag. 7.0

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice rye note with a good amount of booze, some sweet grains and just a touch caramel and citrus rind. Flavor has a nice sweet grain and whiskey note with some rye and just a touch of bitter citrus.

Sniffer at Ruckus Pizza, Cary. Deal good sweet. Barrel. Vanilla. Orangy browncolor. Good iinitial head. Faded quick spotty lace. Sweet flavor. Medium body smooth creamy mouthfeel bitter dry finish. Dam nice. Wonderful mix on rye and barrel.
