COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

750 mL very hazy. Minimal head minimal lacing. Light brow & viscous. Full bodied & creamy palate. Malty start wait a quick move to a very pleasant, earthy bitter that linger into a long finish. 12% is well hidden in this dangerously delicious brew. ~m --RaucusBacchus

I didn’t care for this that much. The whiskey doesn’t really shine through much. It just kind of makes it more alcoholic. The flavor is not that good.

2015 bottle in tulip glass. Pours hazy amber with significant head and aroma of whiskey breaking through. A big, boozy beer that might be classed a barley wine if it weren’t made from rye. Sweeter than I was expecting but it takes a lot of sugar to get to 12% abv. The alcohol and whiskey finish help to dry things out.

750 cc from Capone’s. Poured hazy, rusty brown with off-white head. Nose was intense oaky whiskey, rye, hops. Tasted rich, intense, somewhat hot, dry, with big notes of rye, oak, whiskey, and tannins. Solid and huge beer.

Once, I had a rye beer. And then I was hooked. The pour is odd; cloudy as hell, impenetrable and filled with sediment. The nut brown liquid is capped with three fingers of a foamy tan head. - The aroma is whiskey and oak, caramel and mild malt. The chill on the glass makes me think that I should take my time to let it warm for more of an experience. - It works...the warmth of time brings a deeper aroma, the vanilla and caramel bursting over my tongue, the whiskey warming my mouth, and filling it with beautiful, tangy rye. The taste is lightly bitter, and serves as a foundation for the sweet layer of whiskey. - A beauty of a flavor wrapped in a deliciously quaffable 12%, this is a beer I’m looking for again. Next time, no review...next time, I’ll take my time and savor every drop.

On tap at the 2016 NCBMF. This is a strong ale, as is immediately apparent upon tasting. The flavor is just plain boozy, although I don’t find this objectionable in this particular beer. The aroma suggests a less powerful beer. Lightly sweet and limited spicing from the rye.

Pours hazy dark copper color with tan head. Aromas of bourbon, caramel, vanilla, and oak. Sweet caramel and toffee flavors with bourbon, vanilla, and oak. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation.
