COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Strong alcohol smell with small hints of sweet fruits. Tastes of caramel, dark fruit, alcohol and oak barrels. The aftertaste has a good bitterness that fills the upper part of the mouth for a long time. Too much alcohol in both aroma and flavor for me to like it. Flaska från systembolaget. Gyllenbrun grumlig vätska. Doft av smörkola och hö. Smak som tydligt drar åt bourbon med sin söta knäckiga karaktär. Smått spritig.

750ml brown corked and caged 2014 years vintage bottle, poured into a Tulip glass. Appearance is opaque bronze colored with a medium sized beige head, that when reduced left a little lacing on the glass. Aroma of whiskey, oak wood notes, toffee and vanilla. Flavours of whiskey, oak wood notes, toffee, caramel, rye bread and spices. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter. Palate is full bodied, slightly syrupy texture and average carbonation. Overall a grand beer, well balanced and with a pleasant combination of flavours. Strong both in ABV and taste, a beer for people that like Rye.

Dark mahogany with a beige foam. Beautiful. Tastes beautiful too. There are traditional dark ale notes of caramel, hay, banana, and clove along with a special spiciness, like Sichuan pepper, that lingers and tingles for minutes after each sip.

Corked and caged 750 ml from my trip back home to MD. Pours orange amber colored with some light showing through and a massive yellowish off white head. Aroma is whiskey and spice, oak, some oxidization, a hint of sourness on the nose. Hmm. Weird. Flavor is near straight rye whiskey, lots of rye grainy spiciness, lingering oak and vanilla. Almost no sweet malt presence. Somewhat bland, sort of like watered down whiskey on the rocks. Body is thinner than I was hoping for, with medium carbonation. Meh. Maybe a little hard on this to start, as it improved as it warmed and slowly grew on me. Still was hoping for more sweetness, but paired nicely with some dried figs.
