COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard it’s fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were developing variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a flavorful surge of fruity aromatics and hoppy, grapefruit notes (Amarillo hops), this complex, straw-colored ale finishes long, dry and spicy.

Tap pour - @ JJ. Pours clear gold yellow with nice huge fluffy white head. Soap, spice, pepper and lemon-orange on the nose. Taste is mildly fruity, with more pepper and spice up front, finishing with a definite hop presence. Medium-light bodied with lemon zest. Pretty good, belies the ABV.

Bottle at The Great British Beer Festival 2013. Poured a hazy light golden colour with a big, fluffy white head. Citrus aroma with orange peal and some grain. Flavours of lemon zest, bready malt and Belgian yeast. Finishes with dry grains, grassy hops and some peppery spice. Far, far nicer than the chocolate beer in this series...

UPDATED: MAY 9, 2014 355 ml bottle, pours opaque yellow with ha large beige foamy head. Aroma of banana, orange and lemon peels. Taste is similar to the aroma, but also with a hint of spices and herbs. Well carbonated, medium body and somewhat bitter. Not a hint of alcohol even though this beer is 8.5% ABV. A very pleasant saison.

Really nice balance of stone fruit, light tartness, and a chalky dryness, and unexpected lack of Belgian ale yeast.

Guest tap at Southern Sun brewpub. Pours a clear gold with a huge white head that lingers. Crisp aroma, of yeast and tart lemon. Big sharp taste, of yeast, grass, lemon zest, bitter hops, spices. Lingering lemon yeast. Very nice saison.

Bottle. Pours clear golden with a huge white creamy head and good lacing. Aroma is yeast, lemon, pepper, fruity. Flavor is the same, nice and fruity, light plus sweet with some pepper bite and just a bit tangy. Minimal bitterness present; not getting much from the amarillo. Medium body, carbonation higher than I would prefer with detracts from the mouthfeel a bit.

12 oz bottle The ale poured a hazy gold color with a huge white frothy head and significant lacing. This ale has a light crisp taste with a bitter hops on the tongue. There is some Belgian-style taste but does not dominate. The higher ABV is very subtle. The medium body ale has lively carbonation. The finish is clean with some tropical fruit with some light bitterness.

This came to me from a mail order a few months past it’s prime. Best by date of 6/13, batch number 752251.

Pours almost clear just a slight haze and gold. Straw yellow with a fat creamy head of white foam that fell lazily and left a rocky cap and gobs of lace clinging to the glass. I expected to see a stream of effervescence and I saw only a few stray bubbles ambling up to the top.

Nose is faint. Some muddled fruits and some chalky dryness. If I really dive into the glass I can make out some peach, apple skins and pear. Grass and a little bit herbal. Not really any spice on the nose except for a tiny bit of pepper that is so faint. Mellow and very tame. Bit of mineral quality on the nose.

Taste is subdued and soft. Very smooth and there’s a touch of alcohol on the palate to warm on the way down. The fruits have lost their tartness and they remain muddy on the palate. It is chalky and dry, there’s only a bit of flat pepper. While the mouthfeel is creamy it’s a little hot from the alcohol and a little heavier than if the carbonation had been more sparkling. There’s a bit of lemon on the palate, like lemon zest. It’s not crisp.

I was a little disappointed but I realize that it is past it’s prime. Wonder what it would have been like fresh?
