COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment thatís just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard itís fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were developing variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a flavorful surge of fruity aromatics and hoppy, grapefruit notes (Amarillo hops), this complex, straw-colored ale finishes long, dry and spicy.

Bottle courtesy of milljam. So Iím told this beer is replacing the regular Saison and is the base beer for Saison-Brett. Letís see how it goes! Pours a golden color with a real nice thick fluffy head. Nice retention and scattered lacing. The aroma consists of grapefruit hops, lemon, flowers, yeast, mild spices. The flavors are crisp and quite hoppy and dry. Yeast, lemon, cloves, maybe even some doughy malt mix in but this Saison clearly is American inspired with the strong hop profile. The hops add a nice dimension to the aroma but seem to overpower some of the lighter flavors I tend to enjoy with Saisons. The uptick in abv from the regular Saison isnít as much of an issue as I thought it might be as this is still pretty easy drinking. Still, while Tank 7 is a very good beer, it doesnít quite match the clean, elegant and refreshing qualities I enjoyed from the Saison. Havenít had a bad beer yet from Boulevard.

Bottled sample via and shared with mnurda. Gold in colour with strong carbonation. Interesting aromatics with the initial grassy notes giving way to pink grapefruit, spruce gum, pilsner malt, coriander, and a bit of alcohol heat. Flavors are a bit of an interesting combo to, with the strong pink grapefuit elements linking up with some Belgian style spicing and yeast characteristics (coriander, black pepper, etc.) and wheat. Medium bodied, and not quite as dry as your typical Belgian saison. Iím loving the boldness of all of the flavors, especially the hops. The alcohol heat and slightly sticky malts are drawbacks, but itís still a quality beer.

UPDATED: JUL 17, 2010 Pours straw to light orange with a large creamy white head. Aroma is fantastic with tons of hay, grass, gouda, old library books (something like that anyway), lemon zest, and just the right amount of solvent. Almost brett-like, but without the obvious "beat you over the head" characteristics. Flavor begins slightly sweet and malty with dough, hay, grass, bread, orange/lemon, leaves, cloves, and cheese. Lots of citrusy hop flavor. Finish dries out, but the doughy, cheesy yeast never leaves, only changes. Dry, with plenty of grass, earth, dirt, cheese-rind, and a surprising lack of citrus qualities. Medium bodied, but chewier than some other saisons, and the high carbonation is spot on. Very very good, and I like it more than the normal saison. The Amarillo hops make it pretty damn interesting.

TAR (2435) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - APR 5, 2010
Dark lemon. Voluminous white head slowly breaks up as it subsides. Glorious hop bouquet with bright notes of apricot, pineapple marmalade, flowers, peppered honeydew melon, fennel seed and distant Juicy Fruit gum. Boisterous carbonic prickles on the tongue. Opens up with an explosively floral and juicy hop smack trailed by a vivacious yeast-driven spiciness which builds upon the scrubbing action generated by a raucous phenolic crackle. Aside from some very subtle pearlike weightiness which lends a bit of haze, the beer is dry and cleanly attenuated, enabling the sharper malt and esters to retain their definition. Honey-glazed orange zest brings a lustrous sparkle to the fore while also a tongue-adhering candylike quality which wonderfully contrasts with the bodyís crispness. Unripe melon and peach lends ample acidity and adds to the uplifting character. Malt remains complementary as it yields a pleasant whisper of vivid toastiness (hay) which seamlessly merges with the firm mineralic snap. Vague medical-tapelike phenolics mirror the peppery and leafy hop bitterness. Closes with a flavorsome hop expression coupled with a rustic peppery hop edge gently curtailed by a lingering assortment of fruity esters. A particularly complex rendition due to the masterful balance between the flavorful and cleanly bitter hops, delicate malt and clean yeast-byproducts. Certainly an improvement on the initial (brashly hoppy) draft-only recipe. With all this said, I find it utterly disheartening that this has replaced the regular Saison, which was among the best this world has ever seen. Sigh.

Bottle thanks to? Pours a clear straw yellow with a frothy white head. Aroma of celery and citrus, pepper/paper, juicy citrus is nice, lemon, urinal cake but faint. Flavor follows, celery and citrus, pepper, menthol, off-dry sweetness. medium/light bodied, crisp but softer carbonation. Okay.

bottle. poured yellow with a white head that laced the glass. aroma was lemon, slight tartness, grain, and fruity notes. flavor was a strong lemon citrus, tart, and spice. body was light and dry with high carbonation.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, honey-colored body with a tall, dense, airy, white head thatís notably long-lasting. Smell: Spicy, citrusy nose of white grapefruits and lemons dusted with finely-ground white pepper. Additional notes of sliced bread, meadow flowers, white grapes, and just-picked orchard fruits. Taste: Initial impression of white loaf bread with a few subtle wheat grain nuances. Light honeyish sweetness in the fore. Bright peppery spiciness throughout. Modest hint of apricot. Though chiefly citrusy in nature, the hops also present some soft floral undertones. Restrained, mild bitterness. Splash of chilled Riesling. Crisp, nicely drying finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-high carbonation. Drinkability: Tasty, refreshing, well-balanced, easily drinkable -- I enjoyed it. A great late afternoon patio beer. Give it a try, wonít you?

75 cl bottle, Fargo, ND, USA. Fresh, yeast and citrus aroma. Velvety texture, very nice grapefruit juice with warming hops. Smooth finish, some lime bitterness at the very end.

Pour leads to nice strong head, initial smells reminds me of exactly what a saison should be. The first sip leads with good carbonation, and pear, and slight apple flavors which then take a back seat to the malt and hop backbone. The fruit lingers on the pallet with the malt and really finish nicely.
