COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard it’s fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were developing variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a flavorful surge of fruity aromatics and hoppy, grapefruit notes (Amarillo hops), this complex, straw-colored ale finishes long, dry and spicy.

Poured out of bottle into a wide flute beer glass. Lots of bubbles on the initial pour, quickly dissipating head with just the edge of the glass graced by the lace. Bright orange color, opaque. Smell: Floral hops and citrus.. mostly grapefruit. Pleasant and mellow. Taste: No real flavors coming through, though still very nice... maybe a little orange. The bitterness coming into play at the end, which is good. Soft texture, not quite creamy though. While not a powerhouse, it is very nice to drink. For me it fits both a summer and winter drink. It’s simple taste makes it refreshing for hot days, but the softness also makes it appealing to a cold night in front of the fireplace.

Pours hazy light orange with a nice white head. Head retention is great. AROMA: Orange, funk, citrus, hop floral notes, slight bitterness, herbs, light peppercorn, white wine and slight tart. TASTE: Orange, tart, funk, caramel, citrus, herbs, hop oils, malt, light spice, slight bread, faint alcohol and hop bitterness. AFTER TASTE: Orange, peppercorn, hop bitterness, tart, slight funk and malt with a oily yet crisp finnish. BOTTLE: Best by date 07-2013, Batch # 712293, today’s date 05/21/2015. I re-corked it. Thinking of doing a side-by-side with a fresher bottle. it’s a great balanced brew with many great aromas/flavors but I would like to compare it with a younger batch. Will review this brew again soon.

Draft @ Café Mombasa, Borgerhout. Sweet citrus aroma with bready malty notes. Grapefruit and tropical fruit. Strange style, mix of saison, IPA and tripel. Not bad at all.

Aroma of fruits, peach, floral notes, pale malt, Saison-ish yeast, hoppy notes. Flavour is light to moderate sweet with a moderate bitter finish. Pretty good, but lacking in Saison funk.

Keg at the Three Johns, 14/05/15. Golden orange with a well appointed white cap, good retention. Nose is citric peel, straw, light funk, lemon, farmy notes, faint smoke. Taste comprises yeast, tarte apricot, lemon rind, funk, tangerine. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a citric linger. Solid saison.

Draught @ Albion. Cloudy golden yellow with very small white foamy head, faint vanilla aroma, medium carbonation, slightly flat yeasty taste with faint vanilla flavor, medium finish. Smooth but not that great, on the other hand very very smooth for a strong ale.

250 ml. draft @ Gollem. Now that Moortgat owns Boulevard they are apparently to start selling their beers in Belgium which is an interesting & pleasant surprise. It is also a bit odd since they never did this with Ommegang & they have no intention of doing so. Surprisingly pale golden, creamy white head. Served way too cold. Nose, cold, lightly metallic, sweet, sugary, light sweetish citrus hop, faint grass,…. Taste is lots of sweetness, sugar, white sugar, light grass, coriander, too cold, overly white sugar sweet for me & rather bland, faint almost corn sweetness, light lemon,… Too sweet & cold to easily drink. Surprisingly bland, I do not understand the very high score. Okay but lacks all excitement for me. There is nothing farmhouse here for me. Maybe this is better in a bottle with some conditioning.

Bottle poured a dark golden color with a thick two finger head that retained well. Aroma has grains, wet hops, Belgian yeast, citrus touches, and some farmhouse edges. Mouth feel is medium with good carbonation. Flavor has lots of farmhouse, bright hops, Belgian yeast, and lingers on the tongue.
