Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard it’s fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were developing variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a flavorful surge of fruity aromatics and hoppy, grapefruit notes (Amarillo hops), this complex, straw-colored ale finishes long, dry and spicy.

12 oz. bottle. Ar: A bit stuffy but some nice citrus notes come through up front. Lightly spicy banana as well. Ap: Pours a hazy straw-copper with a 2" frothy head atop my tulip. Nice lace. T: Fairly sweet up front with a spicy flavor. Finish is moderate citrus and quite nicely bittered with a touch of tartness. P: Comes off a bit syrupy to me, moderate carbonation and a bit of stickiness. O: Glad to find this one stashed away in the back of my fridge. Complex and delicious.

Pours hazy straw with three fat and growing fingers of rocky white head, excellent retention and lacing. (4/5) Nose is lemon zest, light stone fruit, light wheat, bready yeast, coriander, clove, mild funk. (8/10) Taste is mild sweet, moderate bitter, mild tart, light pepper spice. (8/10) Medium to light body, lively carbonation, dry peppery and mildly tart finish. (4/5) Quite a nice saison - a decent balance of citrus, Belgian yeast, and dry funk. Fairly complex, without being the kitchen sink it might sound like. (16/20)

Bottle, 04/19/2015. Cloudy burnt orange pour, dense frothy head with sticky soapy lacing. Aroma of bread, soft peach, citrus rinds, lemon and yeast. Taste is spicy lemon citrus, wheat bread, peppery herbal hop bitterness. Medium body, carbonation on the high side with a dry finish. Nice.

pours an effervescent golden straw colour with a thick puffed up white head. The head subsides slowly leaving tons of lacing blotches on the glass. The body appears to be extremely carbonated with a steady stream of bubbles cascading towards the surface. At first glance the nose is subtle but complex with layers of spicy hop and ester notes, citrus fruits, musty barnyard notes and light toasted wheat malts. Crisp and clean first sip with a nice effective coriander and spice blend on the finish. The mid palate is refined and fruity with notes of pear, lemon rind and grapefruit. Crisp toasted wheat and bready malts make up a malty backbone. The esters are really the star of the show with tons of fruity and spiced notes working well with the citrus hops. On the finish a moderate bitterness helps keep it true to style with a lingering spice and saison yeast aftertaste. A truly exquisite saison!

From Smokestack Mixed 4 pack Into a Foothills chalice Best by 04/22/2015 A: Prodigious rocky head of 4 fingers. Bulldog retention. Somewhat pale gold body with very slight orange tint. S: Tangy fruit yeast smell with a little bread. Slight alcohol detected. T: Dry without much of the winey fruit tang of the smell. Yeasty estery without much in the way of hops but what’s there is earthy. Wine/alcohol comes through a bit at the very end. A little like a strong English pale ale. Not what I expected but not bad. M: Carbonation is luxurious on the mouth as the head refuses to settle. Medium body. Finishes with resinous stickiness. O: Not my favorite of the style but OK. Still, too expensive (and too strong lol) for me to buy regularly. Pleasant to try but not really my style.

Bottle. Nose is is very fruity, strawberry, peach, white grape, slight banana, cloves. It’s delicate and perfume like. Underlying is grass, straw and some funk. Taste is straw, peach, floral notes leading to herbal notes, then the very subtle grapefruit which (quite rarely) compliments rather than dominates the other elements. The finish is grapefruit, pepper and a little spice. Mouthfeel is rich and the alcohol barely present. Excellent.

Nice cloudy pour with thick frothy head. Bready taste and filling. Wish the price was lower. Sometimes lucky enough to get singles for 6pk mix and match.

Floral, citrus, clove, bread. Big thick foamy head. Fan of Belgian style but not so much of sour. Or of big alcohol. This, a bit sweet, balances deftly. Very satisfying. Winner 2015 Washington Post Beer Madness competition, drew me to buy four pack at Wegmans Gainesville, VA.

Blond, straw, lemon appearance. Huge fluffy white head. This smells really good. Huge citrus spice nose. Cloudy with lots of carbonation. A little thin on the mouthfeel. Very nice taste, sophisticated Orange and Belgian spice. Would definitely drink again.
