"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Dark amber body with short head. Soft banana on the nose also some light spice, in the taste first came some raisin notes then some notes of figs and some burnt woody notes, didn’t pick up the alcohol only a little warmth, finished the bottle easy enough even after a few of my favourites big beers so must it be good.

Bottle...vinous character with dark raisins and bittersweet floral. Sophisticated and complex yet comfortable like well worn leather. Outstanding.

From the bottle. Nice quad, though not spectacular. They got the carbonation, warmth, sweetness right, though the color and flavor lack the richness you would really hope for. I did not find this to be very bitter. The flavor profile and mouthfeel approximate a good quad. Nicely done.

Deep brown pour, tall fluffy tan head. Malt dominate aroma, more emphasis of lighter aromas like bread. Taste incorporates some darker fruit notes. There’s a fair bit of hot alcohol at the end mixed with a prominent bitterness. Not very complex, no spice. Soft palate. Was dissapointed.

Aroma is sweet dark malt, some dark fruits, fig, a little alcohol. Appearance is hazy brownish orange with medium fizzy brown head that dissipates fairly quickly. Taste is large sweet malt forward, bread crust, some plum fig, bit of roast, tangy herbal hopping flavor. Palate is medium +, sweetness up front followed by bread crust and herbal tangy flavor hopping that lingers, Alcohol hidden pretty well, nice smoothness for a big beer. Overall a nice quad, but nothing amazing here. A little high on the bitterness IMO. Also lacking the complexity needed to be a better example of the style. The price wasn’t outrageous though so its worth a try.
