"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersenís The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

(Bottle) This is an excellent quad with kind of an American taste to it- more bitterness than expected. Really good quad.

Poured a burnt amber colour with a thick fluffy off white head. Lots of yeast sediment is floating around. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, and alcohol. Flavor is sweet caramel malts, dark fruits, bubble gum, and alcohol. Medium bodied, medium carbonation with a bitter hop finish. Flavor and alcohol was initially too abrasive, but became more enjoyable after warming up.

12oz odd shaped bottle from Spirits Barnaget. Poured a super light colored body for a quad, deep syrupy burnt orange with loads of floating yeast and a super ling lasting dense foamy light beige head. Aroma of yeast, sweetness, dough, raisin, alcohol, slight nuts and dry grains. Body is perhaps medium but seems a bit light for a quad, average carbonation, and what appears to be average at best for the aftertaste. Flavor of alcohol, Belgian yeast, dark fruits, bubble gum, banana esters, dough. Good but expected more.

Bottle at Euligy. Wide tulip glass. Hazy medium copper pour with some interesting galaxies of soft white head. Feels like a somewhat standard Belgium caramel quad but with blood orange flavors. Sweet and hoppy. Some nail polish in the nose. Interesting notes of pink grapefruit, banana, watermelon rind, passionfruit. Hints of red liquorice. Prunes and plums. Feels a bit like a condensed wheat beer with lots of red/orange fruit flavors. Complex enough but meanders about. Missing a direction.

Really nice - good typical aroma and taste you expect from a quad. This was nice and malty and luscious and thick.

12 oz bottle, poured into a wide-mouth snifter at approximately 50 degrees F. Appearance: Pours a cloudy orange-amber, and forms a thick orange head with good retention and lacing. Iím hesitant right away, because Iíve found orange in the color of a beer, particularly in the head, generally indicates significant hop presence. Smell: Sweetness strikes right up front, all cotton-candi sugar, wreathed through with notes of plum and fig. Thereís something faintly floral in the aroma as well, but as it is faint, Iím keeping hope alive. Taste: Right out of the gate, and through the entirety of the tasting process, my hop-sensitive tongue picks up a significant torrent of something floral and spicy, which dominates the entire flavor profile for me start to finish. By the end, I can pick out something resembling a caramel and candi sugar sweetness, and possibly some dark fruits, but for the most part I get only a mouthful of floral-spice hops that also have some citrus along. Mouthfeel: Extremely sharp with carbonation. Overall: I wonít be picking this one back up. When I want a quad, Iím looking for yeast esters to shine against a backdrop of sweet malt. This doesnít accomplish that at all. It tastes like an attempt to hop up a quad. Back to Abt 12, Rochefort 10, Three Philosophers, Trois Pistoles, and so forth I go.
