"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

750ml bottle from Vinmonopolet Asker. Big tan head which turns into big bubbles before it settles quickly. Amber cloudy body. Aroma is mainly sweet caramel malt, lightly hopped, some lemon. Sweet on the tongue at first, bitter finish. Dry on the palate. Gets a lot better as the temperature rises.

Darker amber brew appears a little hazy.... almost like a colloidal bubble suspension is breaking up the clarity... 2 finger tannish head dies but persists at about a 1/2" ... fantastic lacing. Nose shows thick complex maltiness.... dark toast, caramel, golden raisins and boozy figs... some peppery phenols with a clove spike. Flavor is punctuated by a abundant cherry ester quality... not as sweet as the nose hints, but nicely malty without ever becoming cloying. Body is a solid medium with abundant small bubble carbonation. This is better than I remember... Well made domestic quad.

2011 bottle, best by 02-2013. Aroma has a nice moderate maltiness with dark caramel, toffee, toasted bread and honey. Light spicy phenolic note. Moderately strong fruit esters of raisin, prune, fig and cherry. Light alcohol note. Pours a cloudy copper brown with some burnt amber notes. Medium sized tan head that slowly recess to the edges where it lingers along with a clump in the middle. Flavor has a moderate malt character of toasted bread, dark caramel, light roast and a hint of honey. Moderately strong bitterness that is a bit harsh. Moderate phenolic spice of clove and pepper. Moderately strong dark fruit notes of raisin, prune and cherry. A light noble hop flavor. Some light alcohol spice in the finish along with some lingering toasted bread and raisin. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Medium low astringency with medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a decent quad, but the hop character is harsh as is the astringency. Could possibly use a bit more sweetness. Nice ester and phenolic character.

Gylden brun klar med hvitt skum. Karamell og kandissukkerlukt . Søt smak, kjenner alkoholen litt for godt. Bitter ettersmak, medium kullsyre

Dark amber color with large fluffy, creamy tan head. Aroma has huge, rich malts, caramel and slight alcohol tingle. Flavor is all malt, caramel, light fruit notes, and raisins. Alcohol presence is fairly evident. Big, thick oily mouthfeel. Very good overall.

Amber-orange with off-white head. Seems over carbonated. Bitterness from the mid palate through the end. Dark fruit and raisin, typical of a quad with a bit of alcohol heat. Would not buy again as I believe there are much better quads out there.
