"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2009 note: my first quadrupel ale :: pours like syrup, looks opaque brown with a touch of red. totally champagne carbonation. The flavor is all molasses, butterscotch, apples and prune. Very Sweet - This is really not what I want my beer to be - ick

A cloudy brew with a substantial head and imposing dark brown color. Aromas are toasty, but there is some floral alcohol and plenty of esters as well. Too many flavors piled on the beer to enumerate. The effect is a little confused, but makes for a distinctive sip. A bottle of this is a heavy lift for the palate. Despite all of the complexities, a good beer to sip.

HUGE head that was actually a pain in the ass to pour. Flavor was weird. Actually tasted like butter and was way to sweet. Didnt hate it but one and done.

This is a very nice example of a Belgian Quad style. Nice fruity funk, very malty, and solid head with a nice lacing that hangs as you drink it down. You can tell the skill brought to BLVD by its Belgian born Brewmaster.

Bottle. This was the first Boulevard beer I have had. Nice brown pour, with a nose of caramel and malt. Flavor was smooth, sweet and enjoyable. Very nice.

Pours deep brown with a big head. Smell is very nice. Sweet fruit with a hint of malts. Tastes like chocolate covered cherries with a malt backing and a nice warming on the way down. Nice brew, I will enjoy this one.

Bottle pours brown to red with haze and a big giant head that seems dissipate rather quickly and does not lace at all. The aroma is caramel, figs, plum pudding, and yeasty goodness. The flavor is strong, sweet, ripe cheese yeast, figs, prunes, caramel, white chocolate, and just right. The palate is a bit overly alcoholic and warm, but hey, the season is right for this. Overall, Im actually impressed. This is a decent Quadrupel.

750ml bottle. Pours a hazy bright ruby redish amber with a huge dirty white, creamy head. Dissipates moderately, however, the head remains stagnant throughout the session. Moderate lacing. Aroma is very fruity and sweet. More apricot, raison, and fig newton than their tripel. Some citrus notes and belgian yeast strain. Definite darker fruit and a bit breadlike, although less than the tripel. Very light burnt caramel hint too. Taste is dark fruits, raison, dates and much deeper than the tripel. Malty and creamy. A definite fig newton taste to it. Reminds me of a fruit with a pit...so darker and not very citrusy, although there are hints of citrus hops. Palate is full bodied and carbonated. Very smooth and slightly warm. Less warming alcohol than the tripel. Great balance. Finishes slightly dry and kind of dough like. Overall, I had this and the tripel back to back, which is why Im comparing them. This beer is definitely more well rounded and balanced. I like the smooth malt backing and the sweet, fig and raison taste to it. The taste starts pretty low key, but really revs up towards the end. This is a really well made quad, ranking just below the top tier IMO.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2013 750ml from a trade on the other site. Thanks, Andrew. Pours a soft copper, with some clear glinting colors coming through to make this a very handsome beer. Lively carbonation in a big way, fast rising head. The smell is very fruity, with lots of sweet malts melding pleasantly with figs and raisins and the slight hint of pears along with clove and yeast notes. The body is prickly, maybe just a bit too much so. But the alcohol is dangerously well hidden for a beer of this potency. Above average quad.
