COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Pours dark red and orange with a strong 1/4 inch head. Average lacing. Nicely carbonated with a super sweet Belgium hoppy flowery citrus smell. The light hops balance well with the malts and Belgium yeast. It finishes with a lovely sweetness with just a hint bitterness. This is not a disappointment. Recommended!

Bottle... DLD’06... Hazy burnt orange ale with a mid-sized, creamy, off-white head. Excellent retention. The aroma is full of fruity, Belgian yeast esters and phenols with prominent golden raisins, apples and plums. Full-bodied and syrupy with lively carbonation. Sweet and fruity with low bitterness. Red hot, sweet, malty finish.

750ml bottle: Batch 68018: This one opened with a loud "pop". It poured with a large tan head on it, and was quite fizzy. The color was a hazy mahogany. The head dropped off rather quickly. The nose is good, but not as strong as I would have expected. Mainly bready and spicy, with traces of caramel and fruits. A bit of effervescence on the tongue. Not quite full bodied. It took a couple of sips to appreciate the taste. Subtle hints of different tastes, but they all blend well together. Nice.

Hazy amber with a thin off-white head. Malty nose with bits of ripe fruit, bread dough, and spice. Sweet/tart flavor with alcohol heat. Didn’t impress me.

Thanks to iowaherkeye for this one - slightly hazy dark amber beer, with a fizzy, foamy head - aroma of over-ripe apples, cherry skins, caramel, moderate spices, some english pudding/treacle sweetness - carbonation is full in the mouth - some strong caramel and plum sweetness up front, followed by light tartness, some wheaty grainy character, clove - a lot of over-ripe fruits in the finish, and a raw cane sugar sweetness - the strength is evident, but not overly strong, thanks in part to a spicy character that makes the warmth of the alcohol more welcome - a little thin-bodied for it’s strength, and lacking the full depth of flavor I expect from the style, but it’s a solid piece of craftsmanship.

Bottle, pours dark with a tan head, plenty of of dark fruits, plums, figs, prunes, raisins, currants. Yeast and alcohol are suprisingly subdued, a nice mouth feel but not cloying not to bad.

Bottle courtesy of tjthresh. Pours mahogany wtith a thin white head. Smells doughy with some alcohol present and lots of dark fruit and oaky hints. Tastes of dark fruit, lots of sweet malt, hints of sugar, some warming alcohol is there but not overwhelming. Mouthfeel is thick like oil. Finish yields some sweet syruppy hints.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2011 Pours a deep amber. A gorgeous and lasting head settles on top of the brew, off-white, thick and creamy, great lacing, it looks delicious. Aroma is very pleasant, light yeast, sweet fruit. It really smells like an authentic Belgian beer. Flavor is also quite good, spicy, yeast, a little sweet. Not at all cloying, though. The body is just what you’d expect, not too thick but not watery. The alcohol is nowhere to be found in the aroma or flavor, even after it warms up. It does make sure you know it’s there, however, once you’ve drank about half of the bottle. Tasty. If you can get it, definitely get it.
