"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

The Sixth Glass is a nice dark amber color with a tan heAd. The smell of the beer was intoxicating, a sign of things to come, it smelled of a Mediterranean fruit fair, figs, dates and raisins. The taste was full and multilayered. On the top was the fruit flavors and on the bottom was a bit of a good dessert wine with some chocolate in between. The high alcohol content affects the taste slightly when drinking at room temperature taking away a little bit of the pleasure of drinking the Sixth Glass.

The Smokestacks confuse me. A mediocre brewery in this state produces what may be some of the best beer in the state, and they limit the sale of said beer to one city, Kansas City. Huh? You’d think this would be the moment to finally start making a name for Missouri beer. Not yet. And I have no idea why not. This Quadrupel is as good as any American take on the style. Malty. Rich. Dark. Very tasty.

Off comes the wire cage, pop out the cork, and it goes into a Westmalle glass, seems fitting. Impenetrable appearance, a hazy burgundy hue, with a slight, yet attractive creamy head. Enticing aroma....bewitching, sweetness and spice. Dark fruits and funky yeast. Lovely stuff! Taste: sharp, phenolic, alcoholic, but still beautiful. Cherries, and sherry, a bit of port, but moreover musty yeast at play. Wish it were smoother, and not so brash on the tongue, little quibbel, there, but it is tasty, and reminds of my favorite Belgian quads, for sure. And they came up with a very unique way to reference the Devil, from, of all places, a Hans Christian Andersen story, that goes on about indulging in alcohol. What’s in the "Sixth Glass"? Why, let me tell you... "In the sixth glass sits the devil himself, he is a little, well-dressed man, most charming and pleasant. He understands everything you say, he even brings a lamp to light the way, not to your home, but his." It goes on and becomes more moralistic, gory, and damning. Sorry, Hans, I’ve got more living to do, before I get melted, and that includes drinking six glasses sometimes! Yummy. Alcohol is too prevalent, ...10.5%!...I’d rather feel more flavor, but this is a nice acheivement as it is. Several stretches short of greatness, but an enjoyable glass or two, or six...

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of Storm. Pours a slightly hazy, orangey brown with a rough, bubbly, off-white head that fades rather fast. Fat aroma of caramel - burned caramel - and some yeast. Quite full-bodied with sweetish, burned caramel and lots of fruit - overripe fruit in particular. Rather warming alcohol finish. Starts rather timid but really grows on your palate. 110108

Boulevard Kansas State Missouri. Sixth Glass Quadrupel Ale Bottle. Courtesy of Storm [Great two day tasting session @ Papsoe] Huge thick beige creamy head that really lasted. Excellent display of lacework. Light cloudy pale mahogany color. The initial sniff gave the impression of dried fruit, yeast, plum, date, light port wine and vinous feel. Over the palate lovely fruity mix with light warming alcohol. Quit complex. Very full bodied with a nice matching soft carbonation and somewhat thick texture. Moderated sweet flavor with a hint of bitterness. Lingering dried fruit and light warming alcoholic finish. Quit lovely and of cause my favorite style…..yummy. 8 / 4 / 8 / 4 / 16 = 4.0 Thanks Jacob for sharing this one, one more Quadrupel PLEASE…. He he

75 cL bottle. Pours hazy brown with a reddish hue. Dense white head. Light spiced and light yeasty aroma. Flavour is mild malty, slight yeasty and spiced. Finish is spiced and holds a nice acidity to the sweet ad spiced flavours. Nice.

KAME (160) - California, USA - JAN 8, 2008
Pours a deep reddish brown with a thin, frothy tan head. Aroma was malty, yeasty, flabby, and slightly toffee sweet. Flavor was similar with a little dark fruit, candi sugar, and light alcohol undertones. Body was overly carbonated and fizzy. Glad to have tried it but wouldn’t purchase on a regular basis.

Courtesy boboski. Deep ruby/amber. Small tan cap. Nose of floral, fruity, ligtly zesty yeast, rich and toasty caramel, subtle alcohol. Flavor adds some biscuity malt, dried fruits, and just the right amount of candi sugar. Full body, foamy and not exactly smooth carbonation. Solid.

I like big beers, so this rates high just for that fact; but it’s not my favorite. It’s a little too sweet for me, but I guess that’s the style.
