"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Bottle. Pours an orangish brown color with white head. Dark fruits, raisins, malty aromas. Strong brown sugar, alcohol, butterscotch, and dark fruit flavors. Not quite on par with belgian quadrupels.

Cerveja bonita no copo, espuma abundante, forte, alcool evite mascarando o fermento. Com malte bem marcado e lupulo sutil.

Bottle in Chevy Chase MD. Nice dark amber body with puffy head. Nose is sweet, smoky, fruity. Taste is nice and fruity, gets more alcy, sweet, toffee and caramel. Warming finish. Nice texture. Well done.

Bottle into snifter. Pours a deep caramel color with a huge tan head that fades without disappearing and lightly laces the glass. Aroma is sweet and smells of dried fruits. Flavor is also sweet with hints of caramel. Goes down warmly but smoothly, the alcohol is not overpowering in the slightest. An excellent beer.

Pour burnt amber with a foamy two finger head with excellent lacing. Aroma is of belgian yeast, dark fruits, sweet malts, rains, musty notes, caramel, overly ripe fruits, and light booze. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium body with a creamy mouthfeel with a mostly sweet, warming, slightly boozy, long finish. Overall, a pretty solid quad.

Bottle. Musty, yeasty, and slightly citrus aroma. Sweet taste with caramel, dark fruit, and a bitter boozy bite in the finish. This is nice.

750 mL bottle. Nice auburn colour with a solid tan head. Mostly yeast in the nose, but the flavour is surprisingly big and complex. Fruit cake up front, a bit of booze in the finish. Honey smooth. Nice find!

I liked it but not the best quad. Toffee, molasses, caramel and bready notes. Light spice and floral notes. Plently of sugary and candy notes that make it a bit too sweet for my liking. Prunes, raisins, cherries, plums and brown sugar. Nice boozy finish with a warmth and lingering light bitterness
