COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

750 ml corked & caged bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 10.5%. BB date 06-2014. Hazy orange-brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of mild spices, caramel, brown kandij sugar, dark dried fruits, spice cake. The flavour is rich, spicy, full of dark dried fruits, and very pleasant - but not too sweet. Sufficient hops, and dangerously drinkable.

12,12,12,12,11,12 - 11,95

From the bottle poured a brownish brew with an ok white head. Malty is the first thing that comes to my tongue and nose. It had lots of stuff floating in it, yeast I presume.

Old bottle (3-4 yrs old). Dark caramel with a hint of red, smoke creamy head, and floaters. Smells like vanilla creme caramel, dark fruit, and a little boozy. Tastes boozy but then cut by a dry (but not too bitter) hoppiness. I actually am digging this today.

glennmastrange (2431) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - JUL 8, 2015
Bottle. Heavy caramel and nutty for the malt, light to moderate cooked orange for the hops, moderate dough for the yeast, notes of fig, date, toffee and brown sugar. Head is small, fizzy, beige with no lacing and is fully lasting. Color is murky medium brown. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately sweet and acidic and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, syrupy with a lively to fizzy carbonation. A very nice Quadrupel. It was just a touch too bitter in the finish, but otherwise everything was in the right place.

Pours hazy copper color, with a 1-finger head that was somewhat cream-colored. Nutty malt aroma, with notes of candied fruit and maybe date. A touch of earthy yeast too. Full body, a touch syrupy, with an astringent dryness to the finish. Nutty malt flavor with earthy yeast beneath. Notes of fig and candied fruit too.

Bottle. Murky medium brown with khaki head. Aroma has figs, toffee, burnt sugar and slight alcohol. Flavor is very similar, figgy, dark toffee, toast and slightly boozy. Lighter to medium body. Not bad, but lacks a certain depth.

Bottle from giant eagle gahanna. Nose is malty and clove. Smooth and appropriate bite. Sharp alcohol shine thru at times but otherwise balance is great and hides it. Banana notes provide some sugar to the mix. Would do again.
