COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersenís The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

UPDATED: AUG 31, 2012 Ah, the loose single case at Lemon Tree, source of some quality bottles for just $2 each, like this one. Pours a sugary nose like many high-test Belgian abbey ales. A brown russet body under a thin layer of foam, a bit more bubbly than usual. And yes, the taste is sugary, but not cloying. Alcohol strength is devilishly hidden. Some brandy overtones, Some cherry, a small piece of funk. Again, a hint of wood, but not from barrel aging. My 100th beer rating from Missouri, currently the same as the number of Belgians Iíve had! Thanks, Boulevard, for making this milestone special instead of some A-B can I got as a joke.

750 mL bottle. Pours a caramel color with a yellowy head and a few fine particles in suspension. Big syrupy red grape and raisin aroma, cherry and apple after with a yeasty note. Raisin and green and red apple flavor with some caramel/molasses hints. Really, really tasty stuff here.

750 ml of Batch #68025 (set aside since 2010 if I recall) poured into a chalice as suggested on the bottle. Was at room temp and chilled for an hour. Deep ruby red and a lasting tan colored head. Aroma of plums, red grapes, Merlot, a little bit of alcohol. Taste is just as good as the aroma with a little yeast in there as well. Ridiculously smooth and full body. Just enough carbonation to be there. A nice warming from the alcohol. I donít think I could find a better domestic quad. This is it.

This was damn good. As is the case so often with this super massively strong beers though, the first few sips are the best, before the heavy alcohol and sweetness starts to get to ya
