Commercial Description:

No. 8 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. "Double Witbier"

Conventional wisdom holds that there are two sides to every story. Though our new Two Jokers Double-Wit is hardly conventional, there are in fact two distinct pieces to its personality. On the one hand, it’s a revival of the classic Belgian “wit,” or “white” beer, a style dating back to the late 1800s. The use of lactic fermentation and ingredients like coriander and orange peel are hallmarks of the style, as are the cloudiness and the pale color that give the beer its name. On the other hand, it’s a modern, uniquely American specialty brew; big, flavorful, and spiced with cardamom, lavender, and grains of paradise. Two Jokers has a refreshing tartness, nicely balanced by a well rounded malt bill graced by notes of caramel. Belgian yeast brings floral aromas with hints of banana and clove, and a citrusy zing to the tongue. Two Jokers Double-Wit pairs well with the lighter fare of spring and summer, such as grilled fish or chicken, feta cheese, fresh garden salads, and fruit compotes. Look closely now: is it two jesters on the label, or a single beautiful glass of beer?

The Dan Journal #266. Tasted 6/22/09. 750ml cork and cage. Slightly hazy with a golden yellow hue. Layer of whhite head. Banana aroams with a lot of citrus fruit and a subtle berry ester. Mildly peppery. Full bodied with a huge effervescence. Which I found to be a attribute. Chalky, perfumy and citrusy. Tingling tart and sour flavor. Nice bitterness. Very nice palate roll. Lively and complex with a great bright character. Well done!

Bottled. The smokestack series from Blvd is a pretty decent set overall. Pours cloudy golden, with medium off white head. Aromas contain alcoholic hints, coriander, clove, and citrus rind. Flavors are of corander, clove, and orange. While this is not my favorite type of beer it is decent and if you like witbeir you may think it is worth the money.

750 bottle. Hazy gold with a diminishing head. Nose is strangely silent, with only hints of spices, alcohol, yeast and hops. Taste is another matter, as this beer attacks the taste buds with carbonation, orange peel, alcohol, perfume, spices, sweetness, a bit of funk/skunk. Very easy to drink but still very challenging to palate. I like.

Bottle. Pours hazy and lightly cloudy dark yellow with an average, frothy white head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, straw, hay), average hop (flowers, perfume), heavy yeast (horse blanket, barnyard) with notes of clove, dates, pepper, nutmeg, coriander, cardamom, and lavender. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and an astringent finish. Long duration, light sweetness and bitterness, moderate acidity.

Bottle 75 cl. Hazy and opaque yellow with a white head. Very spicy almost chili-like nose. Medium body, lightly lactic tartness and gingery notes, again very spicy and hot with a yeasty edge. No bitterness but a light tartness in the finish. Very interesting. 110709

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy orange golden with a medium frothy off white head that lasts awhile leaving good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is floral with banana clove and citrus. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet citrus and coriander and a nice spicy finish. A good Wit from Boulevard.

Bottle from Soonah. Pours a cloudy dark orange color with a one finger size white head. Spice and clove like aroma. Nice body but not as big as some others I have had here recently. The wheat is quite muted but working in the background. Flavor is a lot of fruit upfront that finishes slightly spicy and with a faint hop bitterness. Fruit is mostly apple with some orange and a little lemon. Nice complexity here. I keep trying to decipher the full flavor profile. All of it is quite entertaining for a beer.
