COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A strong ale or "Winter Warmer" with dark red-brown color and a very rich malty flavor. Dry-hopped lightly with Cascades for a pleasant aroma and slightly spicy hop finish. This big beer is deceptively strong, yet tastes very smooth thanks to extra long cold conditioning.Original Gravity: 1.072

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Dark brown color with red shades, and creamy head. Ordinary aroma and flavor of caramel, with some malt; good body structure; it has some spices, both in the aroma and flavor, cinnamon and nutmeg apparently; bold bitterness. Good but not exciting.

Draught, at the brewery

Dark amber colour. Slightly chocolatey, minty, sprucy aroma - none used, though. A little bit thin. Accent is towards toffeeish, slightly chocolatey malt notes.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours dark ruddy copper with a creamy beige head. Aroma of warm roast caramel with a touch of floral hop. Full bodied. Flavor is caramel, hint of vanilla, moving towards brown sugar, with some lightly spicy floral hop. Very smooth. Tasty.

Bottle... Backus’s Backdoor Bash ‘08... Clear, deep amber ale with a mid-sized, fluffy, khaki head. Good retention. Earthy, toffee and caramel nose. Medium to full-bodied with a nice, silky mouthfeel and nearly-expired carbonation. Not much going on, flavor-wise. A layer of sweetness teases my tongue, but doesn’t really deliver on the promise of full, malty flavor. Finishes mildly sweet and lightly bitter.

From the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center Denver 18/09/2010 Slightly spicy aroma. Mid brown coloured strong in alcohol and a little sweet on the palate with a hint of dryness in a bitter and nutty malt finish.

Tasting at mcbackus 10/19. Dark amber pour. Tan head. Aroma is yeast, spices, hops, and some bread. Flavor is pretty good. I get some bread, yeast, sweetness and a hint of the alcohol. I liked it pretty well.

Dark brown with ruby tint. Fruity and malty aroma, maybe a bit of spruce. Caramel and crystal malts play a prominent role in this one. Light butterscotch flavour, fruity. Low hop aroma, but a decent amount of bitterness rounding it off Similar to their scotch ale.

I wish I could find out what kind of malts, hops and yeast this beer used... it would help my dilema. For starters, it has a mild spiced pinecone and wood nose, but the flavor has some slightly unpleasent metallic meaty flavors. The entire experience clashes in my mouth: biting, prickly sharp palate, with an unsettling pungent grass or moss flavor. The flavors resemble Hood Canal Big Beef Stout a lot, so I’m interested in specifically what is the cause.

Bottle thanks to americanbrew. Pours with a hazy brown-amber body and an off-white head. Aroma of brown sugar, dates, a bit of age, molasses, and raisins. Taste is raisins, oak, currant and burnt caramel. Taste is big, large and creamy.
