HoppyGuy (100), USA Aug 20, 2008 On tap at the Iron Rabbit in Olympia, WA. Pours a deep ebony color with a thin tan head. The aroma is roasted malts and chocolate with a nutty undertone. The flavor is rich, smoky, and a bit sweet (almost like a porter), but the hops gives it a nice balance. Lots of character in this beer! Nice, full, soft mouthfeel. This brew would be great on a chilly, rainy evening with the fireplace going and a hearty burgundy beef stew for dinner. rm0312 (35), Idaho, USA Feb 25, 2008 On draft (cask style) at Capone’s in North Idaho. Nice dark appearance with a roasty aroma. Got a little bit of hops with some chocolate in the flavor. It was very good with the sandwich (Philly) I paired it with. I’d have it again. Maria (3975), Thisted, Denmark Feb 3, 2008 Thanks Tom/After4ever! It’s pitch black with a huge, creamy head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, berries and sweet licorice. The flavour is smooth with notes of sweet, but strong licorice, berries, roasted malt and perfumed fruit. I like it a lot, but the perfumed notes are a bit artificial in my mouth. AmEricanbrew (924), Swamp Shreveport, Left Coast, Louisiana, USA Jan 10, 2008 Updated: Mar 3, 2008 Opaque black with a light brown head. Smells strongly of dark bread, roasted nuts, chocolate milk, and chicory coffee. Medium bodied with a creamy yet dryish texture. Taste is a semi sweet chocolate with brown sugar. Has a chicory flavor that makes for a slightly bitter finish.
A great stout, this brew strikes a nice balance between the sweet, blackened, and burnt malt flavors.
Very smooth and easy drinking. Dec 2004 Beershine (1214), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2007 I tried several of Boundary Bay beers at the Autumn Brewmaster’s Festival in Vancouver, BC and at the Pacific Brewmasters Festival in Vancouver too. At one of those, the stout was offered as a cask-conditioned real ale. I am uncertain as to whether the stout at the festival is the same as the Oatmeal Stout listed here but in any case, my notes indicate chocolate flavors and a creamy mouthfeel.
