3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Much darker in color with some dark ruby edges and a light ring of foam. Amazing aroma, full of fresh cookie dough and yeasty bready esthers. Sweet wheat bready malty goodness, aftertaste comes and goes, tasty but forgettable.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled the ’03 version on tap in February 2006. Dark amber, nice appearance. Seems to have aged well, because this is a very nice barleywine. Well-balanced, good malty flavor with nice hop backbone.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a deep mahogany and copper color. Very sweet smelling with hints of alcohol. Tastes of caramel, toffee, and has a very strong bitter hop flavor. Very warming, and sweet.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a deep red, very clear, with a small off-whtie head. Very rich sweetness throughout, lots of rich fruit in the flavor, caramel, and a big hop finish. A liittle bit of alcohol shows in the finish. Nice barleywine that has lots of hops to age a bit.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: APR 13, 2005 Hard Liver 2005
Extremely dark red and purple hues. Smoky flavor, with a very acidic and biting palate, almost annoying. Hot alcohol everywhere, with a ’raunchy’ burnt maple syrup flavor that is unpleasent. Full of old, burnt food with hot hops and acetone aromas. As it warms it thankfully improves, with less of an alcohol burn and more oat and brown sugar flavors.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
02.20.05 Tap at Toronado BWF #58, the other beer that was added on Sunday. Dark brown beer is hoppy, pine and apricot. Fruity and light to smell. Little lace. Dry malts, light roast, nutty. Sticky and pleasing, toffee. Middling hops to finish dry but with very sweet undertones. One of the good surprises of the event for me.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught, at the brewery
Even at a year old, this is still too young. Amber-brown colour. Toffeeish, brown sugary aroma with hints of pine and peach. Very sweet palate. Lots of brown sugar taste, with hints of vanilla, toffee, and pine. It’s got to be around 80 IBUs - you can tell there’s quality cohumulone there but this beer is soooo sweet despite it. A little bit of alcohol gets into the finish. Give it a couple of years.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2003 version, on tap at the brewery. Slightly cloudy dark brown beer with low to no head. Hugely malty aroma, biscuit, cookie, caramel. Seems like there is a vanilla oakiness as well. Flavour is incredibly sweet, white grapes, caramel, and biscuity malts. There is some hoppy flavours here, but the bitterness is completely overwhelmed by the massive malts up front. There is some alcoholic flavour in this as well. This beer could use a few more years of aging before becoming something really special. I like it, but it’s just too thick at this point.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Another really solid beer from Boundary Bay. I was lucky enough to get a side-by-side tasting of 2002 and 2003.
