Draught, at the brewery

Even at a year old, this is still too young. Amber-brown colour. Toffeeish, brown sugary aroma with hints of pine and peach. Very sweet palate. Lots of brown sugar taste, with hints of vanilla, toffee, and pine. It’s got to be around 80 IBUs - you can tell there’s quality cohumulone there but this beer is soooo sweet despite it. A little bit of alcohol gets into the finish. Give it a couple of years.

Nut brown color, small off-white head. Ryeish, caramelly, malty aroma. Full-bodied. Caramel, rye, sherry, some tickling alcohol. Liquerish palate. Probably few years old bottle. Quite nice, a bit Bigfoot-like big American barley wine.

Thisted tasting. Courtesy of After4eveer, thanks Tom. It is beautiful, dark red copper and the head is creamy. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel and raisin. The flavour has sweetness, notes of dark fruits, alcohol, malt, caramel, raisin and citrus. It is nice – but not as complex as a lot of other US BW’s.

2003 version, on tap at the brewery. Slightly cloudy dark brown beer with low to no head. Hugely malty aroma, biscuit, cookie, caramel. Seems like there is a vanilla oakiness as well. Flavour is incredibly sweet, white grapes, caramel, and biscuity malts. There is some hoppy flavours here, but the bitterness is completely overwhelmed by the massive malts up front. There is some alcoholic flavour in this as well. This beer could use a few more years of aging before becoming something really special. I like it, but it’s just too thick at this point.

Pours a transparent bright copper with a spotty, thin off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramely malt has a touch of light fruity esters. Body has some drier alcoholic notes and semi-sweet caramel maltiness toward a warming finish. Needs more sweet malty balance to hide the alcohol better.

2003 vintage
Extremely dark red and purple hues. Smoky flavor, with a very acidic and biting palate, almost annoying. Hot alcohol everywhere, with a ’raunchy’ burnt maple syrup flavor that is unpleasent. Full of old, burnt food with hot hops and acetone aromas. As it warms it thankfully improves, with less of an alcohol burn and more oat and brown sugar flavors.
